With UK and European airlines you will normally get the best deal by booking directly with them through thier websites - they also usually helpfully show you the cheapest dates to fly within a 2 week period as well.

With american airlines i've always found that the cheapest is to go via expedia or another online travel agent to at least identify the chepest options before booking with them directly.

You will nearly always get a cheaper flight if you stay a saturday night - but the last time i looked at going to the states in august the cost was really expensive - thankfully daddy's airmiles saved the day.

Sometimes you can get cheaper flights flying non direct either via another european city (which for me is preferable) or via another US city. You might also want to try searching for flights to somewhere near where you want to fly to and then driving - if you look on expedia they give you alternative airports which are close - where do you want to fly to?

Also dont' dismiss phoning people like trailfinders etc - they found us some really cheap flights to Kenya the other week at work so are worth a try - but you do often have to spend ages on the phone - also STA travel if your under 26 - its best to phone/vist them as their website is complicated.

That's great, thanks, really useful. And actually I am going to New York! And then on to Denver.

Flights to new york are usually cheaper than those to denver but not always especially as denver is more of a winter destination so might be cheaper in the summer.

You can book multi-sector tickets on most online websites now you need to ensure that you get to the right part of the website though.

Though i would also investigate the booking at ticket to NYC and then an internal flight as sometimes internal flights in the US are cheap - but not always especially since they didn't embrace the low cost airline option in the same way as europe did (as in most of the low cost ones got bought out by larger airlines) - but they are still very much no frills so expect to have to pay for drinks and food etc..

It's perhaps worth mentioning that booking in advance usually means a better price (but not always). With trans-Atlantic flights, I think you can typically book up to 330 days in advance.

Also look out for airline sales. You need to sign up to the individual airlines' newsletters to keep abreast of these.
