Arabs took had as many slaves as Westerners
Just been reading a really interesting article in The Week about slavery. Apparently the white slave trade was quite widespread in the Arab world, Arab pirate ships would raid coastal villages and kidnap people to be sold in bazaars and markets, apparently this continued for hundreds of years with hundreds of thousands of european slaves ending up in Arab households!
Also I never realised that the Arabs took 14 million black slaves from Africa from the 11th to 15th century, which is roughly the same as the amount taken by Europeans! Funny how large parts of history are forgotten...
Also slavery was only abolished in Saudi Arabia in the 1960s! Its also still legal other parts of the Arab world such as Sudan and Mauritania...Mediaeval culture I tells ya!
Anyone else read The Week? Very good current affairs magazine I think!

Its just an interesting part of history that for some reason isnt as well documented.
I thought it was interesting anyway, a lot of people assume that slave trade was confined to ancient Rome and the US. There were in fact loads of white slaves - weird no?Last edited by groovechampion; 30-03-2004 at 05:21 PM.

-It bothers Him to see the shit that gets carried out in His name: wars, bigotry... the factioning of all the religions. He said humanity took a good idea and built a belief structure on it.
-Having beliefs isn't good?
-I think it's better to have ideas. You can change an idea, changing a belief is trickier. Life should be malleable and progressive; working from idea to idea permits that. Beliefs anchor you to certain points and limit growth; new ideas can't generate. Life becomes stagnant.
