Also, do not reply e-mails that are asking you to sign your name as a petition against animal cruelty or something.

Why? Becuase I just got screwed on this just a few days ago. One contained a worm and its gone around destroying particular files, I have to boot from floppy as the PC's autoexec.bat gets erased on shutdown.

Certain files have been renamed to strings like "öÝK´fÔÕ.ÆÓ" which are illegal file names (to windows) and file sizes are recognised as several hundred gigabytes (considering I have only 1 6.4GB hard drive I can tell I have an error somewhere)

I am trying to back up my system so I can format the harddrive but the worm took out my CD writer drive.

So only trust mail from sites you know, peeps you know, and tell you friends not to fwd shite like the above. Some viruses don't affect you computer straight away, some not at all but they affect the next person you send to.

BE WARY!
Also is it just me or do some of these threads (e.g. bums and asses) show up as garbage on anyone elses system? All I get it strings of garbage in the style of the above file name demonstration.

Just thought I'd warn you, I'm fed up of playing games with my computer now and I'm losing work beyond repair!!

Some of these problems can be avoided by using `proper' email software. I recommend Eudora

I have Norton & all of my emails are screened for viruses by Norton, before they even get to me.

Also, if you update from Microsoft regularly, you can reduce problems like the ActiveX one that allowed me to get the Kakworm virus a long time ago.

one thing that will solve ur virus worries:
Use a web based account like Hotmail.
It is impossible to get a virus from this unless u physically download the file, which u get asked to do.
Or u cud get Windows 2000 or NT.
Or Like turtle said an Apple Mac, but if u want a secure OS go for Linux. No viruses exist that can affect a Linux computer.
