Forum: Politics & Debate

But who's right?

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Starting a thread in Politics & Debate

Hi all, This is just a quick guide to starting a thread here. You don't have to follow it, but sometimes people may feel concerned about how to bring up a debate. So this is a suggestion for how you might want to start a thread so that you'll be able to get the ball rolling on whatever's on your mind. 1. Debate pretty much covers everything There's a huge variety of issues that can be...

  1. Go to first new post Patriarchy or feminism to blame for male oppression?

"Are men the new second sex?" article from the observer and "Its not feminism that hurts men" from the F-word Have a read of both and then state your opinion. ----------------------------------------------------------- Ok, I will first and formost say I am a Feminist, and thus my default is to defend feminism, but I'm also a human who wants equality for all. I've read both (which...

  2. Did facebook kill off internet forums?

Let's face it, this place (as well as hundreds of others on the web) is DEAD. I remember visiting here years ago, maybe 2005/2006 and it was a hive of activity. Is it time to collectively accept defeat and hang up those forum boots? People just ain't interested any more it seems

  4. Moving back with parents when jobless

The government and PM Cameroon wants young adults who lose their job to go back to the safety of mum and dad, when money runs out to pay rent by proposing to stop housing benefit in such cases. Spare the State from paying out and emphasising the family's role http://www.coalitionwatch.info/2012/04/send-young-unemployed-back-to-mum-and.html Is this fair?

  6. Is it appropriate for schools to have CCTV or similar in toilets and changing rooms?

for further information, I once worked upgrading the servers for a school and know for a fact that the school in question had webcams in changing rooms and toilets. What do you guys think? Is it part of a schools duty of care to monitor areas where teachers can't be in case something happens? Is it a step too far?

  8. Horse Racing

So after the deaths in the Grand National today, what are peoples opinions on horse racing? I have to say I agree with it, I've been brought up with it, going to races since I was tiny, my dad loves it. Alright, yes there are deaths, but there are with human sports too, cyclists, various winter sports (the tea-tray ones) etc. Opinions? Nina x

  9. Philosophical debate: relatavism vs absolutism

I remember a few months ago I found out that it was actually taught like a fact that relativism's weakness is that it holds no absolute values. I think this is beyond stupid, because it's also taught that absolutist values are also weak because they aren't adaptable enough because they lack relativism. Really though, I don?t see the point in absolutist values to start with. If you think about it,...

  10. Your political compass

Hi, I think political compass is the term I'm looking for, but what I mean is how do you work out where you are in terms of your views eg left of centre. I know a bit about politics, but I'm not in a political party unlike one of my friends who is a paid up conservative. I think I have views on different things, but there are many things I don't know about and haven't studied yet. ...

Hey peeps  Just saw this article in the Guardian about the WWF Earth Hour this Saturday. 13. What if the PM isn't elected?

I have often wondered about this, and so far have not found an answer. In our system of government, the PM is the leader of the party that has the most MPs elected to parliament. But what happens if that leader didn't get elected in his own constituency? I assume that they wouldn't be allowed to be PM, but is that the case? What happens in the interim while the party in power elect a new...

  15. British Monarchy Succession Question

This is a little sad, I know, but something has been bugging me for a while. Not only because I want the answer but also it bugs me that I don't already *know* the answer... At the moment, once the Queen dies then Charles becomes monarch and William follows. Hence why we are always being told that William is our future King. But the question I have is, what happens if Charles dies first? ...

  16. Social Workers - Anyone else fed up with them?

Having fostered through an agency in London for a number of years I have been shocked at the disregard for both carers, who do rewarding and worthwhile work, and birth families, who suffer unnecessarily and sometimes horribly. Social workers are lazy, incompetent and frequently spiteful but the real problem is they are completely unaccountable. They do not have to defend their words or...

Watch this Sound great doesn't it? Then read this and this I totally believe that Kony needs to be caught and tried, but I'm not sure the US goverment sending troops in is going to do more than anger the LRA so that they retaliate against innocent civilians. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-16980025 Should councils be allowed to pray at meetings? Or is this kind of leftover from Victorian society unacceptable in today's multicultural Britain? Personally, I'm surprised this has gone to the courts. It annoys me that there are some extreme atheist busybodies who don't have the manners or patience to sit through a bit of religious...

  25. Poll Poll: Should Scotland leave the UK?

We've seen all the gumph in the papers about wether Scotland should remain part of the UK or not, so what do you guys think? I think we're better off as a United Kingdom, but if they're so anxious to go, let them. And let them go completely. No phases, no staggering, if the referendum is a YES for independance then grant it immediately, the very next day. Any support the UK gives to...
