Forum: Home, Law & Money

Is it a rich man's world?

  1. TheSite Sticky Thread Sticky: About this forum (Home, Law & Money)

This is the user guide to Home, Law & Money but you should also remember the registration rules you agreed to when joining these boards. Welcome to Home, Law & Money This is the place to talk about any issues around housing or your home (buying, selling, renting, moving in or out); anything about specific legal and consumer issues (can a shop do this, should they have arrested me this way,...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: “Ask a Benefits Question” in Home, Law & Money

I spent quite a lot of time over the last few months overhauling all the benefits content for the "Money" section of TheSite. It will go live in the next couple of weeks. Edit: it is now live! I wrote a guide to claiming benefits a few years ago (don't use this now - the system's changed a lot in the past six years!), and have had personal experience too. And in updating all TheSite's content,...

  1. wanting to take someone to court rather than them just receiving a caution

just wondering if anyone knew anything about basically what i put in the title. my best mate at uni got beaten up by her ex the other day, quite badly- she was knocked unconscious, had a few fingernails ripped off, a few other things- and luckily she went to the police about it. After a couple of days "on the run" the ex handed himself in to the police, and the police after talking to him...

  3. Angry HOW DARE THEY?!mainly a rant

So I toddle down to my motor this morning-its been broken into. :crying: Some little bastards smashed my rear passenger window and worked over my wheels. They couldnt get the stereo out (har har) but they nicked my Bench coat, which it took FOREVER to find one I liked and even longer to afford. Id had it for 3 years, but still, loved it and now Im cold. Im so angry and sad-whyt cant people just...

  4. I'm getting free newspapers

This is a bit of an odd one, but probably not unheard of amongst you guys. In the last three days in a row, I have received the "Stafford Express & Star". As it's not free (it's 35p), I'm pretty sure that a local paper boy/girl is getting my house mixed up with somebody else's. Shall I just go to the nearest newsagent and see if they can help? Thanks.

  5. Not Allowed On Course Because I'm Not On Benefits - Huh?

Really confused now... Yesterday I went to see a disability employment adviser and got refered to a company called Remploy. I got told by the DEA that I wouldn't get on the course because I'm not on benefits. Why? It's becoming frsutrating now - I can't get a job because of some physical and mental health problems I have and no-one from the doctors or Job Centre seems to be willing to help...

  6. Christmas on a budget..

Please don't shoot me down in flames for mentioning the infamous 'C' word before the start of December, I just wondering if anyone was doing Christmas on a budget this year? How are you going about buying presents on a budget which are still decent and meaningful. I fear I may struggle to buy presents for my three siblings, two parents and one OH, especially since they all love their...

  7. Moved house - problems with previous owners.

Hi, We moved house about 9 weeks ago although we were only given one key and no instructions for any of the electrical appliances that we paid them for - including an oven which was broken - obviously it shouldn't have been! We've tried to follow up a number of times to get the spare key, instructions etc... but they say they'll drop round with them once they've found them etc... So if we have...

  8. Freedom of speech online

Is there any good guides to what can and can't be posted online without getting you into trouble - a forum I look after has someone posting a query online about a certain company but also mentioned the owner's name And someone else replied to say they were in business with them for the last 2 years but slow to respond to phone calls, etc The company has contacted us in a huff asking for...

  9. Your mortgage

What kind of property do you live in and how much is your mortgage per month? When did you buy your home? Sorry to be nosy, I know it's rather a personal question so I'll go ahead and answer first... I live in a three bedroomed mid-terrace house with kitchen, lounge, two bathrooms, conservatory and large rear garden. The mortgage is £637 pcm and we bought the house in April 2007.

  14. Anyone wash anything besides clothes in the washing machine?

I just washed my entire pillow and then a seat cushion in the Washing Machine and they both grew .. The pillow came out really clean but it was like 4 times thicker then before and the cushion about double the thickness.. It's quite cool because both were going really flat before.. :) I've heard you can wash trainers in the washing machine as well if you put them in pillow cases first....

  15. Can I Get My Phone Repaired?

On Wednesday, I was in London and was listening to the MP3 player on my phone and started hearing a cracking noise. Also heard it again yesterday. I went into the O2 shop yesterday (as it's an O2 phone) and asked them about it. I got told that they don't actually repair it, but it gets sent off somewhere. They asked me if I had the reciept and I said no. I then asked if I can still get it...

  16. Benefit fraud - can I get in to the US?

Several years ago I was convicted in court for benefit fraud. I got what I deserved, I was a scrounging scumbag who got caught, and I learned from it. It was all done through the local council, no police involvement whatsoever - so would this prevent me from entering the US? I know that generally if you've ever been arrested then you'll have trouble getting a visa but what about my...

  18. Sub-letting

My housemate's decided to move out ASAP, even though there are five months left on our joint contract, so she wants to sub-let her room to someone else. She says it's her right to choose who replaces her and that I don't have the final say, despite this person being my new housemate. Is she right? Thanks.

  21. Should I say anything?...

...to my neighbours about the fact they leave their kitchen light on all night, every night? It's not like it causes me annoyance, exactly, although it does make my bedroom lighter at night because my bedroom overlooks the back garden and their kitchen's at the back of the house. The main reason it bugs me really is just that it's not very eco-friendly to use that much electricity for no apparent...

I need to send my old stepper back to amazon and they said to use a courier because its big and heavy. Anywhere where i can compare prices or any recommendations? I get it refunded anyway but I can't afford to be without the money for long so I'd like the cheapest possible.

  23. Cited As A Witness

I'm hoping I can get some advice to ease my mind & concerns with the following. I work in retail. A guy attempted to steal from us and I was one of two people who witnessed this. I am one of two people who are cited as a witness to this. It wasn't a straightforward theft but rather an attempted deceit to obtain the goods. That is my explanation of it anyway I might not be explaining it right....

  25. Verbal agreements / contracts

I'm asking on behalf of a friend. My friend got married a couple of weeks ago. About a week before the wedding she went to pay the balance for the venue hire, food etc and was asked what food she would like for her evening party buffet. She stated - verbally - that she wanted a platter of cheeses, with crackers and grapes, quiches, chicken goujons and a carrot, pepper and cucumber crudité...
