Is it a rich man's world?

  1. TheSite Sticky Thread Sticky: About this forum (Home, Law & Money)

This is the user guide to Home, Law & Money but you should also remember the registration rules you agreed to when joining these boards. Welcome to Home, Law & Money This is the place to talk about any issues around housing or your home (buying, selling, renting, moving in or out); anything about specific legal and consumer issues (can a shop do this, should they have arrested me this way,...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: “Ask a Benefits Question” in Home, Law & Money

I spent quite a lot of time over the last few months overhauling all the benefits content for the "Money" section of TheSite. It will go live in the next couple of weeks. Edit: it is now live! I wrote a guide to claiming benefits a few years ago (don't use this now - the system's changed a lot in the past six years!), and have had personal experience too. And in updating all TheSite's content,...

  7. Claiming tax back/Self assessment forms

Hi all, This is research for some new fact sheets in the money section of TheSite.org. Do many of you know or understand how to claim tax back (or when you are allowed to), or when and how you have to fill in a self assessment form? If these subjects interest you, or you think they will affect you at some point, is there any question or advice in particular you would like to know? ...

  8. Dentists Charges

Leigh, after a great deal of perssausion form me, went to the dentists. He has to pay for his treatment but asked for an NHS dentist, not private. He paid £15 or so for the examinationa and X rays, but she now says he needs to pay £50(ish) for each of his 3 fillings he needs (so £150) and 2 visits to the hygeneist at £40 a go. I thought it was a flat rate scheme and you paid x ammount for the...

  10. APR question

Just a quick question about APR as it really confuses me! If I took out a loan of £1000 with a rate of 10% APR, had the loan for 12 months without making repayments and then paid it all back right after the 12 months, how much would I end up paying back? Sorry if that sounds really stupid but some people say it would be £1100 and others say it would be 10% interest per month, and then...

  11. Bit of a Mixture...

I apparently took out Payment Protection Insurance on a sofa loan in 2004. I say apparently because I don't recall doing it nor being asked if I wanted it. Still, when I wrote to complain and ask for my money back using the templates on MoneySavingExpert.Com they told me that it was my responsibility to read everything I signed etc. This was fair enough and since it only amounted to about £200 I...

  12. Talking Mortgage/House help

Hi there! My partner and I have just split up. We bought a house in February of this year and currently have a fixed term mortgage for 2 years (ending Feb 2009). I have been told by the mortgage lender that I can afford the mortgage on my own but my only problem is "paying off" my ex boyfriend. I am looking for any advice anyone can give in terms of options, or perhaps...

  14. stolen things?

i need help. I left some of my things in his house because I was moving flats and needed to store a bag somewhere and my pet bird. One day we had an argument. After a few days I came to collect my things but he said he threw them away and he gave my bird away to charity. I suspect however that he still have my things. Either way what can I do about this? thanks.

  15. Parking issues

This is more of a moan than anything, I guess people will say there isn't a lot I can do! Basically I am an MA student who commutes into London for uni twice a week. Now I am in the process of moving in with my partner who owns a house in Bedford but works abroad for 9 months of the year, so he isn't home at the moment. My savings paid for my tuition fees and I have a part-time job in...

  21. What does the future hold for first time buyers?

Now, I've not yet left university, in fact I've just started, but buying a house or some sort of property has been an ambition of mine for a long while, far more so then having children or a superly successful career. It's not a case of having a huge house either. Ideally, I'd love a Victorian property with all its original features with a decent garden in a decent area, 3 bedrooms max. BUT,...

  22. Gone behind with rent

To cut a long story short I've gone a month behind with my rent from a private landlord who happens to be the biggest cock in history. Over the next 2 months I'll be able to get up to date. He's threatening me with eviction which I understand he can only do with a court order. If this happens I intend to go to court on the day and argue that due to financial troubles I went behind but I...

  23. Mortgages question

Hiya guys, now i already have a mortgage with my ex partner but i am maybe going to be looking into selling our house next year and buying somewhere on my own. My question is really about what multiples lenders give these days? When we got ours i think it was 3.7x joint income was the maximum. That was over 2 years ago now and i'm not sure if it's different for a single applicant. I've done...

  24. wanting to take someone to court rather than them just receiving a caution

just wondering if anyone knew anything about basically what i put in the title. my best mate at uni got beaten up by her ex the other day, quite badly- she was knocked unconscious, had a few fingernails ripped off, a few other things- and luckily she went to the police about it. After a couple of days "on the run" the ex handed himself in to the police, and the police after talking to him...
