Welcome to Home, Law & Money This is the place to talk about any issues around housing or your home (buying, selling, renting, moving in or out); anything about specific legal and consumer issues (can a shop do this, should they have arrested me this way,...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: “Ask a Benefits Question” in Home, Law & Money

I spent quite a lot of time over the last few months overhauling all the benefits content for the "Money" section of TheSite. It will go live in the next couple of weeks. Edit: it is now live! I wrote a guide to claiming benefits a few years ago (don't use this now - the system's changed a lot in the past six years!), and have had personal experience too. And in updating all TheSite's content,...

I usually pay my evil Capital One bill with a cheque but I have stoopidly left my cheque book at uni...it says I can pay it at a bank though...how does this work? Just trot into a Natwest and pay it over the counter? Can I do it at any bank?

In my first year my mum and dad were working full time and earning wayyyy above the entry critera for EMA so I never got it. 5. college and benefits...

i'm very confused... i'm a care leaver who's planning on going to university, i've just turned 18, and my benefits from social services have just been cut. i'm at college doing a course that is 16 hours a week. I've been told that i'm not eligable for JSA as i'm at college and i may not be eligable for income support due to the hours i do. I'm meant to do some part time work which should only...

  6. What does the future hold for first time buyers?

Now, I've not yet left university, in fact I've just started, but buying a house or some sort of property has been an ambition of mine for a long while, far more so then having children or a superly successful career. It's not a case of having a huge house either. Ideally, I'd love a Victorian property with all its original features with a decent garden in a decent area, 3 bedrooms max. BUT,...

  7. Gone behind with rent

To cut a long story short I've gone a month behind with my rent from a private landlord who happens to be the biggest cock in history. Over the next 2 months I'll be able to get up to date. He's threatening me with eviction which I understand he can only do with a court order. If this happens I intend to go to court on the day and argue that due to financial troubles I went behind but I...

  8. Mortgages question

Hiya guys, now i already have a mortgage with my ex partner but i am maybe going to be looking into selling our house next year and buying somewhere on my own. My question is really about what multiples lenders give these days? When we got ours i think it was 3.7x joint income was the maximum. That was over 2 years ago now and i'm not sure if it's different for a single applicant. I've done...

  9. wanting to take someone to court rather than them just receiving a caution

just wondering if anyone knew anything about basically what i put in the title. my best mate at uni got beaten up by her ex the other day, quite badly- she was knocked unconscious, had a few fingernails ripped off, a few other things- and luckily she went to the police about it. After a couple of days "on the run" the ex handed himself in to the police, and the police after talking to him...

  11. Angry HOW DARE THEY?!mainly a rant

So I toddle down to my motor this morning-its been broken into. :crying: Some little bastards smashed my rear passenger window and worked over my wheels. They couldnt get the stereo out (har har) but they nicked my Bench coat, which it took FOREVER to find one I liked and even longer to afford. Id had it for 3 years, but still, loved it and now Im cold. Im so angry and sad-whyt cant people just...

  12. I'm getting free newspapers

This is a bit of an odd one, but probably not unheard of amongst you guys. In the last three days in a row, I have received the "Stafford Express & Star". As it's not free (it's 35p), I'm pretty sure that a local paper boy/girl is getting my house mixed up with somebody else's. Shall I just go to the nearest newsagent and see if they can help? Thanks.

  13. Not Allowed On Course Because I'm Not On Benefits - Huh?

Really confused now... Yesterday I went to see a disability employment adviser and got refered to a company called Remploy. I got told by the DEA that I wouldn't get on the course because I'm not on benefits. Why? It's becoming frsutrating now - I can't get a job because of some physical and mental health problems I have and no-one from the doctors or Job Centre seems to be willing to help...

  14. Christmas on a budget..

Please don't shoot me down in flames for mentioning the infamous 'C' word before the start of December, I just wondering if anyone was doing Christmas on a budget this year? How are you going about buying presents on a budget which are still decent and meaningful. I fear I may struggle to buy presents for my three siblings, two parents and one OH, especially since they all love their...

  15. Moved house - problems with previous owners.

Hi, We moved house about 9 weeks ago although we were only given one key and no instructions for any of the electrical appliances that we paid them for - including an oven which was broken - obviously it shouldn't have been! We've tried to follow up a number of times to get the spare key, instructions etc... but they say they'll drop round with them once they've found them etc... So if we have...

  16. Freedom of speech online

Is there any good guides to what can and can't be posted online without getting you into trouble - a forum I look after has someone posting a query online about a certain company but also mentioned the owner's name And someone else replied to say they were in business with them for the last 2 years but slow to respond to phone calls, etc The company has contacted us in a huff asking for...

  17. Your mortgage

What kind of property do you live in and how much is your mortgage per month? When did you buy your home? Sorry to be nosy, I know it's rather a personal question so I'll go ahead and answer first... I live in a three bedroomed mid-terrace house with kitchen, lounge, two bathrooms, conservatory and large rear garden. The mortgage is £637 pcm and we bought the house in April 2007.

  22. Anyone wash anything besides clothes in the washing machine?

I just washed my entire pillow and then a seat cushion in the Washing Machine and they both grew .. The pillow came out really clean but it was like 4 times thicker then before and the cushion about double the thickness.. It's quite cool because both were going really flat before.. :) I've heard you can wash trainers in the washing machine as well if you put them in pillow cases first....

  23. Can I Get My Phone Repaired?

On Wednesday, I was in London and was listening to the MP3 player on my phone and started hearing a cracking noise. Also heard it again yesterday. I went into the O2 shop yesterday (as it's an O2 phone) and asked them about it. I got told that they don't actually repair it, but it gets sent off somewhere. They asked me if I had the reciept and I said no. I then asked if I can still get it...

  24. Benefit fraud - can I get in to the US?

Several years ago I was convicted in court for benefit fraud. I got what I deserved, I was a scrounging scumbag who got caught, and I learned from it. It was all done through the local council, no police involvement whatsoever - so would this prevent me from entering the US? I know that generally if you've ever been arrested then you'll have trouble getting a visa but what about my...
