Forum: Home, Law & Money

Is it a rich man's world?

  1. TheSite Sticky Thread Sticky: About this forum (Home, Law & Money)

This is the user guide to Home, Law & Money but you should also remember the registration rules you agreed to when joining these boards. Welcome to Home, Law & Money This is the place to talk about any issues around housing or your home (buying, selling, renting, moving in or out); anything about specific legal and consumer issues (can a shop do this, should they have arrested me this way,...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: “Ask a Benefits Question” in Home, Law & Money

I spent quite a lot of time over the last few months overhauling all the benefits content for the "Money" section of TheSite. It will go live in the next couple of weeks. Edit: it is now live! I wrote a guide to claiming benefits a few years ago (don't use this now - the system's changed a lot in the past six years!), and have had personal experience too. And in updating all TheSite's content,...

  1. Best courier?

I need to send my old stepper back to amazon and they said to use a courier because its big and heavy. Anywhere where i can compare prices or any recommendations? I get it refunded anyway but I can't afford to be without the money for long so I'd like the cheapest possible.

  2. Cited As A Witness

I'm hoping I can get some advice to ease my mind & concerns with the following. I work in retail. A guy attempted to steal from us and I was one of two people who witnessed this. I am one of two people who are cited as a witness to this. It wasn't a straightforward theft but rather an attempted deceit to obtain the goods. That is my explanation of it anyway I might not be explaining it right....

Do their offices ever bloody talk to each other ? I had a big form to fill in and went for review and an interview/examination last month about my incapcity benefit and income support and wether i can continue to receive them. Today i received another form (different form though exactly the same type of questions) about my DLA. I know they're paid by different departments (DLA in Blackpool...

  4. Verbal agreements / contracts

I'm asking on behalf of a friend. My friend got married a couple of weeks ago. About a week before the wedding she went to pay the balance for the venue hire, food etc and was asked what food she would like for her evening party buffet. She stated - verbally - that she wanted a platter of cheeses, with crackers and grapes, quiches, chicken goujons and a carrot, pepper and cucumber crudité...

  5. Flexible Love Experimental Furniture

Well this is sort of an update to a post I made the other day about an "amazing chair". Well I have just found the site/company which distibutes these chairs! They come in all sorts of sizes and is made of totally recycled materials! They do all sorts of sizes as well, unfortunately I have no money at the moment and couldn't spend $540 on a chair however, for the likes of me they have...

  6. Appealing a parking ticket

Has anyone ever appealed a parking ticket? I got my first ever one yesterday (after I had locked my scooter up to a fence at the edge of a pay and display car park). The ticket said it was for "being parked outside of a bay"..well, the bays were not clearly marked and I had no idea I was doing so. I have to lock my scooter to a solid structure and there were no bike racks like a lot of car parks...

  7. Saving on fuel?

I think I was having a bit of wishful thinking when I thought (before I passed my driving test) I'd be able to put in a tenner a week and manage on that. Went back to uni this week, and basically I've used a lot more petrol than expected. Prior to this week I was using about 3/4 of a tank a week, so it was costing me about £20. I filled up on sunday (£20 odd) and then I had to fill up again...

  13. unfair late fee?

I've just been charged 12 pounds by my Alliance+Leicester/MBNA Credit card for paying my bill 2 days after the due date. I've been paying that bill for years by standing order, but they decided to move the due date 8 days forwards. They apparently wrote to tell all customers about this in July, but I do not recall receiving a letter - but I may have simply thrown it away assuming it was Junk....

  15. Giving a professional reference

If you get a form asking you to be a reference for someone who's a two-faced, talks-out-her-arse, trouble making cow, what are you supposed to do? Like, the form says "How long have you known this person?" obviously you can just put how long you've known them, but for questions like "Are they of trustworthy character and able to perform the duties of this role?" I wouldn't want to put- no they...

  16. Online banking/payments

I'm pretty new to online banking, especially in terms of doing anything more spectacular or exciting than balance checking and paying into a savings account. So any experts please add your two cents :) I've been doing some freelance writing/translation for some website while we've been living in Sweden (not Swedish website, I WISH I was at that standard ;)) well for the last two months...

  17. Redundancy Q's

Had my final notice of redundancy today. One point of interest has struck me which I wanted to run past those more knowledgeable! Bear in mind today is October 17th! "Your contractual entitlement to notice is 5 weeks, but as we are giving you warning of this now means your notice period is between the 15th October and 16th November 2007. Therefore this is no balance of notice owed to you." ...

  18. Laundry Day!!!!! (Okay it's not THAT exciting, but humor me)

So this weekend was laundry day--well weekend. I had like 5 loads to do it sucked!!!! The only good thing was that my clothes smelled freaking amazing. You know how you get your clothes out of the dryer and you just want to lay in them because they are so warm/hot?? Well, seeing as I'm too cheap to buy detergent most of the time I used these samples from Pure Essentials. I got detergent, fabric...

  20. Ebay question

I bought some shoes on ebay. The seller didn't accept paypal so I sent a check. After the auction I sent a message stating to ignore the address on the check and sent her the correct ship to address. She sent to the wrong address and is now asking for more $ to reship. I cannot find the message on my profile on ebay, though I know I sent it. Do I have a right to my purchase without paying...

  21. What would you do?

If you went to a cashpoint, took out £200, a week later it hasn't appeared on your statement. I took out £300 last night and that's came on this morning. I'm aware privately owned cashpoints might take a bit longer because they need ot send a bill off to your bank I'm guessing but the money was withdrawn last thursday. For obvious reasons I don't want to query the bank :p but I'm not sure how...

  23. Credit Cards

My girlfriend is going to the U.S. soon and the hotel she is staying in requires a credit card as the majority of hotels do. She just wants to get one and then cancel it without using it. Will she incur any charge for this at all? Sorry, I'm absolutely useless when it comes to credit cards.
