Forum: Home, Law & Money

Is it a rich man's world?

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Home, law & money board userguide

Whilst the full guide is written here's a quick overview of this forum. It's for any issue you have around housing or your home (buying, selling, renting or just furnishing); anything about specific legal and consumer issues (can a shop do this, should they have arrested me this way, will I go to court as a witness, can I sue my neighbours for painting their house pink); and finally money (what's...

  2. Selling stuff quickly

I've just been landed with 2 huge bills and I'm going to need to sell some stuff off in order to pay them off. Whats the best way to sell stuff off quickly and easily but also get a fair price for it? I'm taking my guitar to a local music shop and a friend is going to help me with my bike, but I have some dresses which I could sell as well as some books. Ebay? I've not had much luck with it...

  5. How to get money back?

Need to wrack someones brains please! I was renting a flat from a friend, and decided to move back to my parents, due to serious ill health. I gave my friend a months notice, and duely moved out, leaving the flat spotless. Since then, she has been cold towards me with short emails, not asking how I was (this has nothing to do with it really but just add it so you get the jist) and I have not...

  6. Rental Notice Period

I'm currently living with a friend and we're thinking of moving because the house is kind of crappy for the money we're paying. We've emailed the landlady and asked how giving her notice would work in order to prepare her for the fact that we may be moving out in the next few months and also so we know our obligations. We used to be on a six month contract but now we're currently on a monthly...

  7. Problems with landlord

I moved into a flatshare 2 months ago. I went to look around it seemed really nice had a homely feel to it and the landlord seemed ok too. However, from the day i moved in things have not been great. Whenever someone uses the cooker the smell of buring oil/ fat drifts into my room even when i have the door closed making everything that is left out smell like the chip pan. I found out later on...

  8. Fixing a not flushing loo

I've got a close coupled toilet which has been flushing badly for a month or so, and over the past days its stopped all together. I have a feeling the membrane on the syphon has gone, so I think I'm going to have to replace the syphon but is there anything else I can try first? We can't afford to call a plummer out (already paid a handyman at the request of our landlord, who did fuck all) and...

  9. Need to stop being generous with my money..

Hey guys. So I have this problem, whereby whenever my family ask me for a 'quick loan' to sort something out, I sort it out. Or where if I'm getting a takeaway with friends, I end up paying. I can't really fault other people for that, it's my own doing. I just need to stop it though, because I think people do take advantage of that, they don't 'get the next one' or 'pay me back when they...

  10. Smile Disabled and need a place to call Home!

Hey, thanks for welcoming me into chat tonight. I was advised to post this here after talking about needing somewhere stable to live as i'm currently living in a hostel. I'm disabled with 2 progressive diseases in my joints and will one day never walk again. The council are useless and i've phoned so many other places in Coventry where I live, and they are either full with no spaces or i'm not...

  11. Exclamation "theft from employer"

I live in the uk, today I was suspended by my retail work place for allegedly taking £2, I had taken it from the till to give to a customer who claimed they'd been short changed but before I had a chance to give her the £2 I had a security spot check, I hadn't declared taking the money from the till on the system because there was no evidence to say they customer was short changed. Because I was...

  12. De-icing Cars

my first thread in months and its all set to be an exciting one :D recently with the cold weather snap obviously most people have been deicing their cars in the morning, its just what has to be done. the only thing is, mine takes AGES! the outside windows are fine, bit of deicer and a scraper and they're done in minutes but what takes ages is the inside of my windscreen. it freezes up to to...

  13. jsa- really confusing

Since deferring from uni I've been trying my hardest to get a job- any job. So far I've been unsuccessful. We are really struggling financially. I live with my boyfriend who earns 22,500 a year from his job though he has recently taken a 10% paycut. The last time I tried to apply for JSA I was turned away because my boyfriend earns this amount. I saw someone from CAB today who didn't...

  14. Financial issues of uni

We are now discussing our uni options in sixth form. So far, I have avoided this conversation with my parents. I want to live away from home. My mum is disbaled and we are on benefits. But, there is a possibilty that I could go to Oxford or Cambridge, I've had A's in all of my subjects so far. Of course, there is only a small chance. But nevertheless, I want to go and live away but I don't know...

  15. Terrible internet - can I cancel my contract?

I'm currently about 3 months in to a 12 month contract with TalkTalk, but the service is absolute shite. My internet has barely functioned the entire time, and has got to the point where it is now barely usable. It kicks me off every five minutes and I'm getting pitiful download speeds that make doing things like watching iplayer impossible. Does anyone know what the legal situation is here -...

  16. Rented house - unsafe boiler

We had a boiler repair man out last week (sent by our landlord) as we've been having ongoing issues with the boiler. When we first moved in last September it just didn't work, so we had no hot water for about 6 weeks whilst waiting for the landlord to send someone out. That got fixed and at the time the repair man was saying he's used to coming to this address and has been telling the landlord...

  17. Supported housing for disabled people

I really want to move out, really can't stand living here any more. (My senses are causing major issues for me and with 2 dogs, it is so bloody noisy here, which is starting to get painful) There is no way I could manage by myself; as I need quite a bit of personal care. Where would I find information on support housing for disabled people living in Plymouth, please? Google only throws up...

  18. Enhanced CRB checks/Mental Health?

Hi, I'm not sure if I'm asking in the right place but I'm wondering if detention under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act by Police is likely to show up on enhanced CRB checks or not? Additionally, do other sections appear on enhanced CRB checks? The reason I ask is because I have been detained by Police three times on this Section; once when I was 17, the second time at 18 and the most...

  19. Escaping Payday Loans

Right now I'm taking out Quick Quid loans to pay off Wonga loans to pay off UncleBuck loans... 21. landlord retaining deposit

I moved into my flat before the deposit protection scheme came into existence, so my deposit went direct to the letting agent. Now my cunt of a landlord is trying to charge me for things that are clearly normal wear and tear (I won't go into details or I may never stop, but trust me on this), and he wants to keep my entire deposit. He's blatantly taking the piss. Is my only option the small...

  22. Financial problems [Uni]

I'm at uni and in my third year of a four year course and financially I'm not sure if I'll be able to last this semester. The money that I get in terms of a student loan isn't anywhere near enough to cover my expenditure. Close to 75% of what I get a month goes on just getting to uni each week. I've looked at my spending and I see no real way to cut it. I can't cut travel costs as they're...

So I went to the bank to get the order cancelled just incase the company go back into business and decide to send me the products. 24. ESA stopped but still signed off

I'm in a real catch 22 situation right now and I can't seem to get any advice on it. I was on ESA, I had the medical and the "healthcare worker" didn't listen to most of what I had to say - she scored me as top in the mental health section but then in nothing else...doesn't quite make sense considering I told her about the IBS and all the other things which the mental health affects. Anyway,...
