  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Advice For Those Going Off To University For The First Time

I've already been and completed my Business Degree - but if any of you first timers have any questions then feel free to ask me and the other older ones who have been to university will help you young ones out. Although my general advice would be: 1) If you can - live in Halls - move out of your parents house and go live on your own for a bit - you'll learn so much about life doing this...

  1. Open Days

When I signed up for my Open Days I naturally assumed I would do it by myself. I wouldn't want my parents to go, it would cost them more money also (nearly all of my options are far away from home) and my friends are going to different uni's and have n't considered open days yet( i am in year 12 but have been advised to start early). Do you think it's a bit strange? When I went to one recently, I...

  2. Studying styles, which one are you? With a few tips!

Hey guys, I remember for the exam stress and revision chat we had, and remembered I said I would share a few tips on things with you. So... Let's get this party rocking!:yippe: Students can perform better on tests if they change study habits to fit their own personal learning styles. Some students remember best materials they've seen, some remember things they've heard, while others...

  5. Degree Classifications

I'm having one of those middle of the night brain won't shut up thinking kinda moments... Does degree classification matter when applying for jobs? Do people really get turned down for not having a certain grade? Has anybody ever been refused from a job because of the grade they finished with? My friends seem obsessed with comparing grades and it sends me cuckoo. I'm not sure what my...

  6. Postgrads - how did you fund your course?

I really want to do a MSc this year but obviously it's not as simple as getting all your loans from student loans company any more. I was just wondering how anyone here that has done postgrad who self funded went about it? And how was repaying it afterwards? I am aware of the career development loan you can get from the bank but if I remember rightly you have to start repaying it 3 months after...

  7. Choosing subjects

What would be a good minor (paired with a geology major) if I want to study planetary science? I plan on being a geology major once I get my general education out of the way. Would astronomy be a good minor? What other minors would be good preparation for graduate study in planetary science? ___________________________________ external keyword tool ~ keyworddiscovery.com ~ keycompete.com ~...

  8. Studying with the OU

I'm looking at both the MAs in Music and Humanities with the open uni, I'm not sure which would work for me, but I'm so not sure if studying with the OU would work for me. A friend of mine has been studying for a BA with the OU and she's said she's had to give it 12hrs a week. I'm not sure I could give it that much time right now because of my health, but I'd like to hope that maybe next year...

  9. Vocational training and funding

Next year, theres a course I would like to do if I am well enough. But funding seems to be a huge problem. Its a level 4 course and vocational, so even if I could get student funding I can't because its vocational (a level 4 C&G course). I doubt I would be able to get a career development loan because I'm not sure how I'd pay it back straight away. Its possible but very unlikely that I could find...

  10. Statistics - Brain Boggled!

Hello hello, bit of a long shot with this one but hopefully somebody will know something! I'm writing my dissertation and because it's a science-based research study I need to do some sort of statistical analysis with the results that I get from the study. I was wondering if anybody knows what is best to use, whether it's possible to make sense of it all through Microsoft Excel or whether it...

  12. Question from the Netherlands

Hi I am a student from the Netherlands and I'm doing research about the fame of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and for this I need your help. I am wondering how famous he is. So I have a few (just 2 actually) questions for you: 1. Do you know who Antoni van Leeuwenhoek is? 2. Do you know where he is from? Just reply, even if you don't know anything. Thank you in advance. :)

  13. options

I'm not sure it would be helpful to go into the whiney specifics because I've already covered it in different threads and it must be getting boring. To summarise, I'm on an MA in Social Work course (fulltime) and have started my first placement at a really good school for children with complex learning difficulties as well some with a physical disability. I'm in my sixth week there (3 days...

  14. Sixth Form College interview

Hello, I am moving on to Sixth Form College in september and i've got an interview for the one I want on the 27th January (oh my god, that soon). Yeah, the letter says... 'If you have a Record of Achievement, it is helpful if you can bring this with you.' Urm... stupid question but what is one of these? I do not have one. Is it a CV? Dont want to get rejected from the place I want...

  15. Who do I talk to?

Right, so I'm trying to decide whether I go back to university in September. I guess what I really need to do is talk it out, all the pros and cons. But I don't know who to talk to. My parents are being rubbish. When I told my mum I was ill and worried about exams she was all like "It doesn't matter, you need to concentrate on getting better blah blah blah", but then when I told her I'd...

  16. Finding the right MA

I'm really struggling to find an MA program that will actually allow me to do the dissertation that I want to. I don't really see the pont in doing an MA that doesn't even point me in the right direction of where I want to do further work. I'm starting to think about looking abroad/OU/MRes, but I'm not sure of my options. I'm looking at a possible september start if I can go part time, if not it...

  17. Self teaching languages

When I was at school, I quite enjoyed Spanish. The only way to have carried on learning through GCSE was to take French as well. I didn't want to take French too; so couldn't take Spanish. I've looked online to see if there are any classes in my area - the only ones are "tasters" - I don't just want a taster - I want to actually be able to learn the language so that hopefully, I can go...

  19. Applying for a Masters - Oh and another question...

I'm in the process of applying for a Masters and need to write a personal statement... Only, I'm not 100% sure as to what I should write... The course is an MSc in Gender, Sexuality and Society... I did my dissertation for my BA (human rights and politics) on a gender related topic and I've volunteered in Nepal with trafficked women, but this was years ago... I am active with campaigning,...

  21. Access to Higher Education courses

Heya, I'm wondering how many of you out there (aged 19+) are or have taken an Access course in the past and how well you've did? I'm also a member of TSR where I've been in frequent discussion about Access courses and apparently a lot of people do well in them and get into reputable universities, including a guy who went to my old college who ended up at Cambridge studying Law.

  23. Work experiance

Hey guys :) We've been told that if we want to do work experience we have to find the placement ourselves. I was just wondering if anyone could give advice about how to do this, and where would be a good place to do work experience? (I want to be a lawyer or work with the mentally ill, but I doubt I'll be able to do anything like that for work experience haha!) Thanks, Niamh
