How on earth can they justify wanting to charge me £75 to 'switch on' my phoneline?

Apparently thats how much it WOULD have cost to have an engineer come out and fit the phoneline but the phonelines are already fitted so why so much?

Do you have a bt phone socket in your house already? Because they normally re-connect you for free, if you already have that there.
This happened to my friends when they moved into a new house, but because there had once been a phone there before they only had to switch it back on kind of thing, so no engineer or person calling round needed. I would ring up again and have a moan see if it achieves anything :p

yeah thats what we did, its only £75 to install a phoneline. so dont worry, if there's one there, it should be free!

Might need to be switched over at one of them green BT box things...

Then they would charge you for an Engineer call out... but then again I have no idea about how bt work with thier phonelines!

yep, I already have the phone sockets installed - the nice people that built the house and left wires hanging out of the ceiling managed to get the phone sockets installed at least (come to think about it, they're probably just white boxes stuck on the wall to look good  )

because I'm the first person to live there they're saying I have to pay £75 but if someone had lived there before they would do it for free :impissed:

edited: I did ring them to ask and they said it would be a connection fee of £75, when I asked why it was so much they said it was because thats how much it would cost to have an engineer come out and install a phoneline - but the damn phoneline is already installed

Yep my mum's in the same situation, the white box is already fitted everything within the house is ready to go but BT want £75 to activate the line, she doesnt even WANT the phone line with them!

Someone tell me why it is that even if you choose to go with anothe rprovider for a landline you still need to pay £75 to BT, doesnt that defeat the purpose of other companys paying BT to use BT's lines ?

As a Telecoms Engineer I've dealt with BT on enough occasions to realise they're a bunch of wankers.

We had to pay exactly the same when we moved into this new house. It sucked big time.

In that case, I would investigate which cable providers are available. Often they do deals.

Also, other companies now offer line rental- presumably they also offer line activation services. Toucan, for instance, start their line rental at £9.99, over £2 less that BT.

The problem with BT is that they are so big, if you tell them to fuck off they won't give you a better deal.

Still, if it wasn't for all these astronomical charges, they wouldn't be able to pay their managers the disgustingly obscene salaries that I know for a fact they do.

EDIT: Actually, I think connections are now dealt with by Openreach, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BT- a bit like how Transco was hived off from British gas. So you will probably have to pay £75 regardless of telco you use. Openreach seem to own the network, which means you don't have a choice. Oh joy.

I've looked at cable but apparently my house still doesn't exist :impissed:

Why do I have to pay when the fooking thing is already installed *stamps feet* /mature :p

I hate that we're owned by these big companies and have no choice in so so many things

actually - on a different subject, do manchester give you 2 months off from paying? :chin: I really need a phoneline putting in :(

We had that situation at uni, but because they were about two weeks late installing it they actually ended up owing us money. Covered the next two bills if I remember rightly :D

My sister had this same situation a while back (except it was back in the day... they only wanted £50). She was in rented and ended up just using her mobile for the duration of the time she lived there.

thats right we were told we would have to pay regardless of who we got PLUS no one else would come here but bt.
You can get it spread over the next few bills if need be, you pay a little extra though. But if you cant afford it right out then do it that way.

My Dad said he'd pay it for me, but its not the point - he's already getting me a new contract out on a cell phone and I don't like relying on my parents all the time!

stoopid BT

I really dont see why I should have to pay an 'installation cost' as its advertised on their website when the pissing thing is already installed - surely Bellway will have paid to have the phonelines installed?

Not when they finally get their act together and demand you pay 9 months within 7 days, as it is already overdue!

I know people that have been there for two years and still havent received a bill

something to do with the place not really existing, and the meters not matching the right plots etc

was it the first time it was switched on or was it a reconnection?
