I 'am planning to leave my current job sometime before christmas, however I have never been issued with a formal contract and was wondering if anyone knows what the minimum notice is that I have to give.

Ask?
If you don't have a contract, there's probably no official notice period but it's only courteous to give as much notice as you can.

It depends on how often you are paid.
If you are paid weekly then you should offer a weeks notice, if you are paid monthly then you should give a month...
It's not a legal requirement, and you have no contract to breach. But if you want to give this employers as a reference in the future (and your next will wonder why you aren't, if you don't) then it would be a good idea to follow that guide...
