Okay, hopefully this will see some interesting replies. This is your favourite guitarist, not your opinion on the greatest. Who makes your hair stand on end when they play that note?
I'd have to say Carlos Santana, saw him live in 2003, bloody blew me away.

Nicely put, I've seen EC twice now, front row in Birmingham, April 2004 and at the very front, dead centre for the Tsunami Relief gig at Cardiff in January. He had me mesmerised on both occasions :D
If we were talking about greatest guitarists he'd be second after Hendrix for me

I thought it was tough to learn hendrix's stuff, but the tone that SRV got was absolutely awesome. Still can't quite get it right but then, I like my fingers the shape they are. Super wound 13's do just too much damage to my hands to justify the effort.

Despite your very cool avatar, I personally think Santana sucks donkey balls. I'd have to say that he's very overrated.
For me, hmmm - so many!
Well, I guess you'd have to break it down into heavy and not-so-heavy.
For the not-so-heavies, you can't knock the holy trinity of the Satch, Vai and Malmsteen. I'm not really a fan of Johnson or Stevie Ray but I do concede that they are very talented.
A very honorable mention goes to a guy called Michael Angelo Battio whom I would doubt anyone has ever heard of. Considered the best shredder in the world with Yngwie.
For the heavies, well, shit you've got so many. Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth) is awesome as is the current Megadeth geetar player. Dimebag, Zakk Wylde, EVH, Buckethead, the list goes on.
Personally, Slash sent shivers down my spine but the best technical guitarist I've ever seen is Glen Drover who is the new Megadeth guitarist.

Have to agree. He's still the best in that genre though. Perhaps it's just that the music he plays sucks in general. :p

Satch is the only one of those who is actually musical. Vai is out and out experimental, and the king of widdle is widdle. Vai is amazing when working for others, especially if they are more interested in music then making new 15 note scales or atonal bird song based chinese blues music.

Agreed but some of Vai's stuff, particularly the Alien Love Secret album is fantastic. Also the Crossroads duel. That was really fucking cool.
Best shredder ever is Djando Reinhardt. With two fingers.
Ah yes, the Belgian gippo. Phenomenal talent but I wouldn't really consider him a shredder seeing as most people define shredders as thrash/post-thrash guitarists. But if you're considered the only white jazz legend ever, you're not doing too badly for yourself.

Off the top of my head though, Slash is the only one that sticks out, and possibly Josh Homme too (although maybe not up there with the best, i still like his style of playing and the sound he gets out of his gear). Joe Walsh, Jimmy Page and Richie Blackmore deserve a mention too.
Bassist-wise, Favourites/Influences....hmmm.... Louis Johnson, Mark King, Scott Reeder, Tim Commerford, Dirk Lance, Steve Harris, Flea. There's no 1 favourite player in that category though.

Josh Homme does have a good sound - most of the stuff is Dropped by 2 tones so his strings are slacker and obviously lower tonally. Doesn't he play a jazz box guitar?

Josh Homme normally uses custom-made Ovation electrics. Custom in the sense that Ovation only make electrics for a very select few; they normally just make electro-acoustics.

Taken from thefade.net (http://www.thefade.net/band/equipment/joshsetup.html)
On stage, josh uses a variety of guitars. His main "Axe" being his prized Ovation GP's (GP stands for Guitar Paul, as in Les Paul,) of which he has three. The GP was a very well made Les Paul copy, as opposed to some of the other LP copies made at the time. The originally came in 4 colors. The GP's that Josh uses are a honey burst with what seems to be a flame maple top, a black, and a cherry burst color GP. These guitars either came with DiMarzio Super 2 pickups, or a Korean knockoff pickup. The parts were manufactured by Samick in Korea and assembled in North Carolina As many Queens of the Stone age and Kyuss fans know, this guitar can put out tone like no other. If you want one of these guitars, your chances are slim, only 250-1000 were made in a short run in 1984 and if you do find one it will cost you around $2,000, much more than the original price of about $400-600.
He played Ovations and various others from all the way back in the Kyuss days, up until the Songs for the Deaf album. He now uses mostly Maton guitars and now Motorave Guitars (http://www.motorave.com/home.html).
And I don't even play lead/rhythm, I play bass but still love his guitar work regardless, even back to the earlyish 90's. The band used to, and still do in some respects, play in drop C, a full 2 steps down. But some of the songs on the Lullabies to Paralyze are back to the standard E.

Ah yes the Slayer boys. Very good shredders but there are a lot of people, most of them a lot less successful (which is possibly why you haven't ever heard of them) who are faster and better but Slayer still rule.
Wylde is an exceptional shredder. If he only wouldn't use pinch harmonics EVERY SINGLE NOTE!
The best shredders in the world are rekoned to be Yngwie, Michael Angelo Battio and Buckethead. Suggestions welcome.
I saw this thing on clapton once, He was trying to copy an old blues player. Some of the stuff he was playing was genius, they wasnt sure if the old blues player had a second guitar playing on some of his tracks, clapton tried copying it with a single guitar anyway, it was a some amazing playing.

Some people seem to be mistaking 'favourite' for 'best' in the thread title!
There are a few guitarists that stand out to me, my favourites are probably satch, hammett, hendrix and slash. I prefer guitarists who focus on melodies and put emotion into their playing rather than those who spend their time playing fast, uninsipred & boring stuff (dimebag, wlyde, etc). I must say that while hanneman and king can belt out fast riffs their lead skills are crap, they just play notes as fast and randomly as poss.

Satch actually tutored Kirk quite a bit after kill em al, he had sessions with him after master of puppets. The influence is pretty clear in the AJFA album that followed.
It's true that kirk rapes the wah pedal nowadays, and has done since the black album, but I guess it's just 'his' sound.

Simply not true. It does get on my tits a little when people make generalisations about artists which are so unfounded. Tender Surrender? Whispering a prayer? Crying machine? Lotus Feet? Juice? Dime was exceedingly good at guitar, even while completly hammered he could play a set through note for note with no mistakes.
Yngwie is all technique, seriously, Ive never been to a more boring gig. Apart from the novelty of seeing a fat swedish bloke in leather trousers jump around stage playing arpeggios at the speed of light over and over again it was shit.
Satch was a bit better - when he was improvising, but mostly he just played through the songs like they were on the record which left me cold.

It's very cliché, but I still watch DVD's of Jimmy Page and stare in awe. A guitarist doesn't have to be the best at playing guitar for them to be the best guitarist in my op'. That Nwiggie pisspot who burns fretboards (whose name I can never spell) is as good as they come, but if I had to go and watch him I'd likely end up walking home early. I'm also considering songwriting in my nomination.
