My mother made me throw away a dented can of beans today. She's insisting that you can catch botchulism from dented cans! Is that really true?

The contents can react with the metal if the inner coating is damaged by the denting. But botulism, no.

I wouldn't buy a dented tin but if I droppped it at home, no probs.

I think it causes paralysis and comes from some sort of toxin. Someone correct me if I'm wrong :chin:

It's botulism, it's an extremely serious but rare form of food poisoning.

It sometimes occurs from canned food, but that's really home canned food, not really something we go in for here, more in the U.S.

Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that causes botulism. It can cause death by paralysis. It's really rare but is associated with canned foods. People have no trouble with preparations of the toxin being injected into their face though... as panthro said.

Nope she has it the wrong way around. If it looks like your can is bulging, than you can catch botulism, due to the fact it's and anaerobic bacteria (doesn't require oxygen) it can live in cans, and if it does, it feeds off of whatsoever is in the can, and produces gas as waste, hence the bulging of the can.

The beans would've been out of date by now anyway since this thread is nearly 2 years old :p

Wonder what happened to Panthro? :chin:
