Had a load of virus come on to my PC from being redirected to a dodgy site which I thought was safe .

Any way, got rid of most fo the spyware/viruses but I think there is stuff still on my system that AVG & MS Anti-Spy ain't picked up. One thing that is bugging me is a change that has been made to shell32.dll and I cannot change the wall paper or anything like that.
Any ideaS?

System Restore if you're on XP?

Is your machine patched with the latest microsoft hotfixes from windows update too?

System redtore is off & yes it is.

Felix, you are actually in a better position if system restore is off - because virii can manifest themselves in there, making them more of a nuisence.

Visit McAfee or Symantec and run their free online scans. When it lists the offending items (+ their paths), manually locate the virii and delete them.

Hmm, system restore was on, I nearly all ways turn it off. Oh well :).

Perhaps the Virus turned it on?

Got A windows XP disc? Run windows repair or just reinstall it all. Its a hassel yes, but it depends on what viruses they are and what they do. Trojans? Worms? What are they?

Its time to birn that important Data to DVD I think!

Can I just say as a pedant: the plural of virus is not virii, it is viruses.

Sorry, McAfee isn't all that great. AVG free is better than that tbh.

I know that spellcheck in MS Word prefers it as "viruses", I've always known it as "virii".

So have I... but its better to be safe than Sorry. I love it when the Virus cocks up half of windows so it boots up in half dead mode and loads of stuff doesn't work... its the sign of a born fighting computer, that is.

DVD RW are a godsend for internet users. Backing up is something we should all do, we all know it, and no one ever does.

It is simply wrong, the plural of a word that ends in -IUS is -II, for example the plural of RADIUS is RADII.

The same happens with Octopus and its plural, the plural is NOT octopi, it is octopuses or octopodes.....

I am a pedant and proud of it.

I do! I back up frequently. And also take a copy of current backups to my parents when I visit them, just incase anything happens to the PC or house. I've learnt by my mistakes in the past. I always tell people to backup their files, even their whole system if they can, but nobody ever seems to listen to me.

I've started to back shit up noe, but not the whole system. To much data, I cant afford that many DVD's or be arsed to burn that many. I back up critical stuff, the rest can die for all I care. It does annoy me though. GRR. So many lost bits of useless tat I will never find again.
