Can I start by apologising that I am the biggest computer dunce ever so this is going to be in really blonde terms, but any help would be majorally appriciated.

I have a toshiba lap top, with xp, its pretty battered and very well used, but recently its started doing this weird thing and is driving me insane.

I can be typing away, and suddenly the screen goes from normal to really really dark, at first I thouhgt it was crashing, but then saw the shadowy outlines of my page, and with alot of effort can move the mouse about to save work and then can shut it down properly.

On re starting, the toshiba start up page is always lit up, and the windows start up lights up for a while before the darkness happens again before the start upprocess is complete. nearly always. but after lots of restarts the proper screnn comes back. I try starting just on battery, just on ac wire, try shutting down and starting, try re start, logging in and out etc.

On sunday I re booted ma whole computer to restore the factory settings, and that seemed to do the trick, I didnt dare turn it off, but it was running perfectly, until today, when the old problems are back. I am now typing in the dark so I apologise for any typos!!

Before today though, it would never happen unless I turned off the computer, and on turning it back on the next day it would have the problem. So I thouhgt by keeping it on constantly I would stop it happening again, but today just as I was typing the screen went dark.

someone pleasase help its driving me mental!!!!

Laptop eh? Well, thats a TFT screen (falt panel) which uses a fluorescent light tube to light it up, I think that mgiht be going dead and/or loose wire. Take it to a PC repair shop, they can probably repair it pretty easily.

Have you installed your graphics drivers correctly? I get the same kinda thing happen on my Desktop PC when I reformat & reinstall Windows.
