Ok, this is really cutting up my calm.
I have a really good laptop, everything in it works fine but lately(especially today) it just keeps switching itself off..like completely. It doesnt shut down or anything it just goes dead! i think i have a faulty power influx somewhere..but thats all i can think of. My power adaptor is dodgy too, for ages it would only come on now and again, like it overheated..i waited..then i could plug it in again..but now its on all the time again. Im confused yo
ideas? anything like this happend to you?

Sorry: I read that as "It's cutting up my clam"
Ahem.
Sounds like it's overheating. It's not a Dell Inspiron laptop by any chance, is it?

nah not a dell.
Is that generally what overheating will do? just switch it off? i think thats probably it.

Yes: components will cut-out if they get too hot - a kind of failsafe to stop them from blowing up.

If it's when you're leaving it unattended, then it might just be a power saving option, but a glitch may be stopping the computer from coming out of it. I used to have that problem with an install last year. I had the computer set to turn the monitor off after a certain amount of time, but it wouldn't turn the screen on again, even though everything was running fine. Just had to turn all screensaver/screen blanking options off.
I'm wondering if your laptop is set to do something like hibernate when it hasn't been used for a while?

in my flat at uni, two people have sent their toshiba laptops back because they were constantly overheating and cutting out. toshiba were cleaning out the cooling system and sending them back within a week. seems to have solved the problem

My PC used to do this ALL the time. Never managed to work out what was with it though. Did get sent a rather random patch from a friend of mine which fixed the problem. Oh, and I have no idea what the patch is meant to do...
