u know these free anti virus things?? Well do they actually stop viruses cuz my exes pc was always covered by anti virus but it still seemed to pick up viruses and trojans and spyware??
We have had to do a factory reset as there is a fault with the pc itself and apparently all the viruses will be gone but just wondered how to keep it that way.

You need to keep updating them
TBH, you get what you pay for. BUY a decent AV, like kaspersky, liveupdate for protection against the latest viruses, real-time protection as you work, and full system scan.
However, Microsoft antispyware is free, and superlative for spyware protection. Using many things to keep your computer safe is a good idea.

Hmm avg along side with spyware search and destroy and microsoft anti spyware should keep your system perfectly clean, run a scan every week, update every possible chance and your be ok,
download.com will have spyware S&D and microsoft is avalible on the microsoft website and go to www.free.grisoft.com I think..

Most people agree that AVG from Grisoft is the best free antivirus package out there. It can be set to update itself, and scan, automaticly. It also scans your email and attachments. It's dead easy to install and use.

I also think it deepnds what version of windows you have running too.
My mum got loads of viruses, even though her AV is uptodate. She has windows ME which isn't as secure as, for example, windows 2000.
