Hostels

Just wondered if any knew how to tell what's a good way to tell if a hostel is gonna be good or not. I'm going to Canada in the summer and will be staying in hostels. I've been looking on www.hostelz.com the ones listed there have user comments under them which is helpful but with a lot of them there are either really good comments and really bad ones. I'm not sure what to believe. Anyone got any tips?

Erm just search on the internet, thats all I can really say. Me and some mates stayed at a hostel in Paris last year..we came across mixed internet reviews, so I can understand that its hard to believe somethings. Luckily our stay at the hostel was fine, and the bad reviews were proven wrong..at least in our case. There must be some kind of official site out there with proper ratings I'm sure..what about the Canadian tourist board or something like that?

my friend was a member of the YHA and we went on mini youth hostel holidays when we were about 15. had a good time, but ended up sharing a room with 2 other people which we didn't really want to do.
