Not sure where to put this...

Anyway, I've been voluntarily DJing locally (last night somebody threw me behind the controls, showed me what the fader & play buttons are and how to select the tracks) and it's going alright. My mate who's a DJ too is well impressed and I was wondering if anybody could give me some tips on improving what I know.

Last night I played a lot of 80s music (because I was messing around, some people started dancing to the 80s pop and I stuck with it because it got them going), tonight I had to play dance because of the location... It was hard because I know nothing much about popular dance artists... However, it went really well and we had the busiest night ever.

So I was wondering if anybody could advise me... I'm hopefully going to learn to beat match soon...

Have you got your own decks yet? I'm getting some soon and will be in same position as you. Well you've already had experience of playing in front of a crowd which i would love to do.

There are some people who DJ round here so i'm sure they'll give some advice, there's some book also from amazon which is like £10 which i've been told is worth getting. Something like "How to DJ (properly)".

Anyway good luck with it.

The only way you can become good is to practice. Beat matching isn't something someone can teach you. You just have to keep on doing it until it clicks. Tune selection will come naturally.

No vinyl decks, only CD decks.

To be honest, there's not the market in Wrexham for anything that involves something as creative as scratching. It has 2 CD decks and that's it. I have to play chav dance on Saturday because the town is full of people who don't want to venture outside what's fashionable. However, in all fairness I found a nice Grandmaster Flash remix, Mr Scruff and some Basement Jaxx.

Watch the girls and note what gets them on the dancefloor.

Know your crowd and play for them, not yourself (not being patronising, you'd be amazed at how many experienced DJs can't grasp this fact).

Tbh, sounds to me that your doing all the right things, tracks wise, keep an eye on the specialist charts/mags/DJ shows. R1 usually print a playlist.

Good luck,

Explain this ...

To me it sounds like either you dont no much about genres and you made your own.. "chav" or

You dont have the right atitude to DJ. How can you insult people that your venue/ the artists that produced the songs by reffering to them as chavs

..alot to learn

Deciding on what music to play depends who's there and where you are. If your not sure on what music to play then take a look in front of you and see what type of people there are on the dance floor. Are these loads of camp looking people? black people? More males or females? What are they wearing?

If you got a bunch of people with white gloves and skimpy outfits then stick on some Hard House. If there are more girls and camp looking people then stick on something sexy and funky. Just don't be to scared to experiment, play some tunes, see how people react to what your playing. If all the sudden people bog off to the bar then you've gotta look in your bag and find some different tunes. If there is more people coming on to the dance floor then stick with what you got. It's all about mixing and matching

I have always had the opinion of DJing to a crowd is like having wicked sex with someone you've never done it with before. You explore them, see what turns them on, and when you find what hits the spot maintain a steady pace and then slowly build up to the climax.

In other words, don't start playing the best & biggest tunes to early other wise you'll end up at the end of the road with everyone having heard all the best tunes and then get board with the rest of the good tunes that you should of used to start off the night with.

Most of all just be happy and have fun, don't be to serious or be scared of messing up. Don't be scared to experiment. If your looking like you've just been slapped round the face with a wet fish then chances are the people who are dancing won't be as happy as they should :).

Also just watch and see what other DJs do, listen to DJ mixes and practice & practice.

Do you think proper club DJ's go out with a specific mix that they will definetely play, or do they chop and change there mix as they go along?

they'll prob ahve an idea of the first few songs they want to play but a good dj will eb able to respond to the crowd and what they want and tailor his set accordingly.

Yeah, thats what most do. The most important part of being a DJ is tune selection. Most clubbers don't care how you mix or if you can scratch.

Try and find some mixes. They go down really well. Alcazar's new single (This is the world we live in) rocks too.
