View Full Version : One for the girls....Divacup

Has anyone heard of/used a Divacup? www.divacup.com.

It's some sort of cup that you insert which collects everything during your period and only has to be changed 2-3 times every 24hours.

I've heard several recommendations from people in America where they seem more readily available. Apparently they're really good for travelling (well you can see why....no carrying bulky tampons/pads, no having to find a loo just as you need to change etc)...

I just wonder how long it would take to get used to one, as even if I bought one now I would only have 1 period before I set off travelling. Anyone used one?

I got one a few weeks ago, and I can safely say I'm never going back to towels/tampons. I think 1 period will be enough for you to get used to it and see if it's 'you', I knew I was sticking with mine within the first couple of hours. Good luck! :)

Yeah i've got one had it for over a year. Tricky at first but you ge the hang of it. Although i still do use tampons sometimes for convienence. But if you don't like the diva cup you can send it back within 3 months and get a refund. So it can't hurt to try it.

ive got one, Its brilliant. Ive still got a packet of tampons on the shelf that ive had for about 18mths since i got my mooncup - I just cant be bothered to use them now, they need changing more frequently etc, dont feel as reliable, plus theres the disadvantage of having a string hanging out of you which gets weed on all the time (or is it only me who got annoyed by that?)
theyre actually more hygenic than tampons because of the nature of the silicone they are made from. Its inert and doesnt encourage bacterial growth in the same way that tampons and towels do, therefore they dont carry the same risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome.

:chin: I saw some of these in a public toilet... they look strange.

I don't think I'd want to be fiddling about with my fingers so close to all the blood personally... but then again I usually flood a bit. :yuck:

I don't use tampons because I just think it's a bit too much fuss compared with pads... and I can't do anything when I'm on my period anyway cos I'm usually laid up in bed and knocked out on pain killers so there'd be little use using something which is more conveniant when going out while you're on.

I know I'm being really really dumb  but I still don't quite see how it works... it says to cut the stem if its too long... wouldn't that mean the blood would trickle out? How do you get it out without sloshing everything everywhere? Or have I compltly got the wrong end of the stick?
Can someone explain to me... I'm really thick I need helping out here. :crazyeyes

Also for those who use them... isn't it a bit of a hassle with having to wash them and everything instead of just throwing something away when it's done with?

Of course they dont.

when you trim the stem, it doesnt make a hole in it, it just makes it into a bowl rather than a bowl with a bit attached.

The way it works is it covers the cervix, completely, creating an almost light suction (not suction like a hoover, but suction like one of those soap sucker things) This stops anything leaking. When its time to remove it, you break the suction by bearing down slightly to make it start to come out, then when you pull it, the suction breaks and it comes out easily. Nothing spills because most people actually bleed a lot less than they think they do. The cup probably wont even have much blood in it.
You then empty it into the toilet bowl, rinse it and reinsert it.
At the end of your period, you can wash it in the washing machine, dishwasher, or boil it, whichever you prefer.
I know some of you will think its distasteful to have to go anywhere near your own menstrual fluid., theres all this advertising implying women that its gross, its almost part of the culture and people react as though youve asked them to touch their own faeces!!! Completely illogical.

Well, if things are labelled as 'sanitary' protection, it won't give the most positive message. I don't have a problem cleaning up my wounds if I've cut my arm, I really don't see the difference in touching a little blood/mucus that has happened to come out of my uterus.

And yes, I hated the string thing too.

yeah its called Northisterone. There's a few threads on it if you search it. I used it about 4 years ago when I went on holiday and it worked fine...didn't get any side effects, although I hear a common one is bloating. Only downside is having to take a pill three times a day which is a bit of a hassle. You can just go into the doctors and they'll prescribe it for you, I wouldn't take it often though, just if you feel its really necessary. Now I just use the contraceptive pill back to back if I don't want a period, much easier.

In regards to the divacup, it looks good but it looks quite difficult to use! I'd get scared of the thing gettin lost inside me! Don't think I'd ever use it.

I still don't see how you can get the Divacup back out again without making a mess - is it something that takes practise? surely it doesn't slide straight out really easily if you have to fold it to get it in in the first place.

Also, something that's been bugging me with reguards the pill... was reading the leaflet the other day and it pissed me off... how come if the contraception pills were originally made for women with irregular/painful/heavy periods to try and sort them out, why doesn't it mention it in the leaflets???
I can't have kids naturally and it's really upsetting reading all the advise on how to use it safely to stop you getting pregnant. :(

I think because the cup is never filled - you empty it often enough and we don't produce as much blood as we feel like we do, generally, during those sort of time periods before cleaning out again, you can probably squeeze it so it can be removed from inside you, without spillage ? But i wouldn't know, all new to me!

It does sound harder to use than it actually is. I had heard of them ages before I actually plucked up the courage to get one. I was completely the same "oh im fine with tampons, theres no point in using anything else if im happy with this" Eventually I thought sod it, ill give it a try. Partly for financial reasons. tampons and towels arent cheap to keep buying every single month. This is a one off buy and it lasts for years. It does save a fortune and I dont ever have to worry about running out. There also is the environmental benefits to having a reusable product rather than disposable ones.
Now ive got one, I wouldnt go back. The blood doesnt spill, and I dont think it would unless you took it out while standing on your head or lying down, because of gravity. There generally isnt enough in the cup at a time to actually spill, and unless youd left it AGES and it was really really full, then it wouldnt happen, and even if it did, youd be over a toilet at the time.

SuzyCreamcheese
29-03-2005, 04:42 PM
I would just be worried about it being pushed upwards and gettin stuck.
Your vagina isnt never ending so it wouldnt get stuck. When its time to take it out, you bear down (think pushing a ping pong ball out - thats a good party trick!) I guess it helps if youve got good pelvic floor muscles. The bearing down doesnt push it out all the way, but it brings it to the entrance of your vagina so you can then take it out easily.

yeah i was a little worried about it getting pushed up.

tampons can get stuck at the top and sometimes need to be taken out by a doc (depending on how long its been there! it happened to my mate.. not nice)... can it happen with the diva cup ?
well tampons are thinner than a diva/mooncup, and because of the fibrous nature of the cotton wool they are made from, I can see how they could get stuck, although im unsure as to why she couldnt just put her own finger up there to take it out  Ive never had a tampon get stuck nor have I had the mooncup get stuck, so im not really sure.
I wear my mooncup overnight without any problems. Remember it doesnt have the same risk of TSS as tampons do, so wearing one overnight would be fine.

If you manage to get a mooncup stuck in your cervix you would really be trying.

Obviously I've never used one, but all my friends who have used them will never go back to tampons or towels.

And it's only a bit of blood, even if you do spill it. Don't be so squeamish:p

Am really considering this now. Just a few things that are stopping me. I'm less worried about it getting stuck than it falling out, or becoming dislodged when I was in a position where I couldn't go to the loo. Am also concerned about the public toilets aspect... I'm guessing it wouldn't be too much of an issue since I have very light periods, but it still concerns me. I hate putting a tampon in in public loos, as it feels too public... this seems much more intimate, and I'm worried I'd get nervous about it and then be stuck with a nasty bit of plastic that I couldn't get back in again. The thought of walking out of a public loo to wash my hands with them covered in blood doesn't really appeal
Bit worried about being able to feel it too, I have a pretty good pelvic floor, and can 'feel' things really well.
I'm probably worrying for nothing. I want to get one for environmental reasons, as I'm not happy with throwing everything away. I don't really have cost issues, as I mentioned, I have a really light flow, so it takes about 6 months to get through a box of tampons, I only use one sanitary towel each period so pantyliners are the only thing I buy very often.
The only other thing I'm concerned about is the sterilising thing. I live in a shared house with a guy, (who whilst I'm good friends with, I'm not sure I'm that good friends with!) and I don't really want to give up a saucepan!!

Nope. Never had any leaks or fuss, even overnight. People would actually be really surprised about the amount of blood that is lost i.e a lot less than they would think. I think it's partly to do with the fact that tampons also absorb the natural lubrication in the vaginal walls, whereas the cup doesn't. And there's no chance of cotton being caught and 'left behind' in the walls :yuck:

I always change mine when I'm in the shower, never had to change it in public, but although it sounds tricky, they're very easy to take out and put in.

No, it doesn't go all the way up like tampons can. It 'sits' in position where the muscles hold it there, quite low down, but not so far down that you can feel it (and I have quite a strong pelvic floor). And there's no worry about it 'falling' out if you're too relaxed! I can imagine bearing down quite hard might bring it down but I presume the suction prevents it from popping out!

To get it out, you basically need to ease it lower by holding onto the stem (which can be trimmed) and then gently pinch the sides to break the suction, and ease it out. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but it has never leaked over my hands, or spilt everywhere.

go_away
30-03-2005, 04:21 PM
I think you would benefit from it. My periods are very light as I was on the pill for 3 years (now the IUS, waiting for them to stop!) and so even when I used the lightest flow for tampons, removing them would still be difficult, as they absorbed the natural lubrication as well as blood. I don't have this problem with my mooncup and it's a nicer feeling knowing I have more control.

So I tried out teh mooncup-i kinda tried it first time after a bath and it was damned messy to get in and my hands were like a horror movie! I then eventually got it in and felt like it was sucked up inside and when i tried to get it down a bit could feel suction. I pamicked a bit so decided to take it out! Took ages and more mess and about 1cm in there already after no more than ten min-eek!

BUT that was my first try and I have been given lots of advice by the person who sold it (www.jesterboots.co.uk or something!) so will update next month!!

LOL, nightmare.
Hope you get the hang of it soon.
When you want to take it out, you dont just pull, you have to kind of turn it a bit whilst pressing/squeezing it till you feel that its broken the seal. Then it should come out easily.
The fact that you felt suction meant that you had it in exactly the right position, so even though you havent got the hang of doing it quickly and easily yet, you did have it in right in the end.
I think maybe you had trouble cos you were at a heavy point of your flow, and also warm baths can increase the flow I think.
It wont take you long to get the hang of it.

I used mine for the first time last week in Australia! At first it was a total nightmare, it leaked quite badly the first night - I think I didn't have it in properly. Then I could feel it the whole time and it was really uncomfortable. Eventually I decided to cut the stem and that of course made all the difference!! Now it's perfect. Mind you, by the time I'd cut the stem it was near the end so the flow was much lighter, who knows if it'll leak again next time. Well next time I'm going to be travelling in Europe so it'd better not!!

I think the main difference is that the diva cup comes from canada and the moon cup from the uk.
Although i don't think moon cups have the measurement markings on them like the diva cups do. I dunno about moon cups but with the diva ones you get a little purple drawstring bag to hold it in and a purple flower pin/broach thing

Hi

I started using DivaCup about 3 months ago and I would never go back to tampons. I hated tampons because the string would irritate me and they would drop out when I went to the loo (have problems since having kids).

I don't have any of these problems with the DivaCup - it stays in place whatever I am doing. I only have to empty mine morning and night - and it is much 'cleaner' than removing a tampon - the outside of the DivaCup doesn't have any blood on it and that's the bit you touch. I simply empty mine down the loo. You don't have to insert it very high at all - its not like putting in a Lillets for example. When it is inserted you can still touch the end of the stem.

If I did have to empty it in a public loo I would simply wipe it out with a tissue and reinsert it. Someone earlier mentioned blood-covered hands, but honestly - it just doesn't happen.

You can sterilise them using milton which might be preferable to boiling it 'in public' if you share a house - but to be honest it doesn't take long - some people even use the dishwasher to do it.

The DivaCup stem isn't as long as the one on the MoonCup so I didn't need to trim it at all - and you can get them in the UK now which makes it easier to get hold of.

Just to sit on this thread, has anyone heard of a 'pill', it is not a contraceptive but you can get it from the docs, to like, skip a period for a month i.e. if you're going on holiday and don't want the hassle...

Might open my own thread on this but...anyone? :)

Malt xxx :D
Yes, it's called Norethisterone. you have to start taking it three days before your period is due and three times a day until your holiday is over. once you stop taking it, your period comes within three days.

Unusual b'day gift!

I would think that the 4-12 hour changing time relates to what part of your period you're in. For example, at the beginning of your period, blood flow will be a bit heavier so you'll want to change it more regularly.

You can probably wear it in the shower or bath but I'm unsure about swimming pools...hopefully someone more in the know will come along shortly...!

as MM says, 4-12 hours is depending on how heavy your period is at the time. For instance Im wearing mine now and havent had to empty it since this morning, but thats because my period is nearly finished (in fact this has just reminded me lol), but the other day I was changing it 4 or 5 hourly.
you just kind of know when you need to change it, in the same way you know when its about time to change a tampon, you just get used to your own cycle, and it doesnt matter if you empty it more frequently than is strictly necessary at first, its not as if youre wasting anything, like you would be with a disposable product.
Ive worn mine swimming before, and in the bath. No problems at all.

Is there ever a chance that it might "unstick" itself? i'm tempted to get one (am on right now, and have suddenly remembered just how much of a pain in the womb periods really are) but i'm a bit unsure. being still at school and having a really heavy period right up until the end might make it difficult.

according to the website.....
Will The DivaCup™ work for an active lifestyle?

Yes! It's fantastic for swimmers, outdoor enthusiasts, aerobic classes, cycling, travelers, campers, and so on. You will feel fresh, secure, and liberated. No feminine hygiene products to pack (or run out of). No worries about staying close to a bathroom. No restrictions on physical activity. And since you can wear The DivaCup™ longer than tampons or pads you have the convenience of not having to think about your period all day long!

who knows though....i still havent ordered mine! :crazyeyes

I think the main difference is that the diva cup comes from canada and the moon cup from the uk.
Although i don't think moon cups have the measurement markings on them like the diva cups do. I dunno about moon cups but with the diva ones you get a little purple drawstring bag to hold it in and a purple flower pin/broach thing

ooh a flower pin! you know which one im choosing! does it say diva cup on it? cant wait to wear tht thing out! :p

good girl.
You will be surprised how much of a small fortune you save using one of these instead of buying stuff every month.
