Might be a pulled muscle, appendicitis - a whole lotta things - go to your doc - out of hours treatement or phone NHS24 :)

I'd get into your GP as quickly as possible to test for anything that could possibly causing you a high amount of pain. It sounds like the kidneys to me if it's under the ribs. You could have an infection or a stone. It's easy to check for an infection, just place your hand on your back just under the rib cage and give it a push. If it hurts like all get out than it's most likely an infection, to be treated with some antibiotics. If there's no pain, it might be a stone. I'd get into your GP to get some pain killers quick. You definately don't want to be sober passing those bastards.

Are you talking out of your arse?

Actually no. I meant that if you did the same test for an infection (pushing on your kidneys) you won't experiance the same amount or degree of pain at all.
I recently underwent a cystoscopy. A nice little procedure where they stick a rigid, plastic scope, about the width of a pencil, up your urethera. I had a bladder stone (~3.7cm) which is slightly different, and extremely rare. Kidney stones pass, but it hurts. I've had 'em before and I didn't have any painkillers. Paracet won't do the job if you've got stones. Bladder stones don't pass and it hurts even more. A kidney infection is basically constant flank pain (the area just below your ribs in the back). I've had all three and was hospitalized twice.
Anyway, get into a doctor as soon as possible. They can significantly reduce the pain and they'll take care of you. Trust me, that is one ride you don't want to repeat.
Good Luck! :thumb:

To be fair, he has neither kidney stones nor a kidney infection.
I don't envy you the cystoscopy though. :crazyeyes

Yeah well thank god for anaesthetics! And today I've just been informed that I'll be experiancing constant pain for the rest of my life from my surgeon/GP. Not terribly enchanting news.
I'd like to read what the diagnosis is, because it definately sounds like stones or an infection.

Sharp, bilateral low chest pain (shifting to the right), not bad enough to see a doctor or to take paracetamol till last night, not accompanied by urinary symptoms or colicky loin pain. Or fever, malaise or haematuria. And you think stones or kidney infection? Possible I suppose but not top of my differential.
I'm not having a go, but I think (a) it's more likely a chest issue rather than a urinary one and (b) generally if something is not serious enough to take someone to a doctor then it generally isn't an acute problem/serious concern.
My guesses would be a musculoskeletal chest pain, pleuritic chest pain, or a form of indigestion. But we're not here to diagnose, so joshmeister if you still have the pain you can either see your GP or ring NHS direct for more help. And alcohol isn't going to help you either way.

That's true, of course I didn't know all of the symptoms. I just got "sharp pain under ribs" so I just went off of my own experiances. But thanks for bringing that up anyway.
When I had a kidney infection I experianced no haematuria but a lot of flank pain. The fever didn't come on until 2 days in the hospital, granted I was only 8 years old, but that's just something you don't forget.
I like your suggestion of indigestion because of the shift of pain. So far there's been no suggestion of difficulty or painful breathing. Indigestion sounds like the best bet. This has been a fairly interesting topic... with three posters.
Anyway, cheers Kentish!

Could well be trapped wind you know, take some pain killers, see if that helps first, if not then try some Wind-eze or something get rid of trapped wind, it can be pretty unconftable.
Maybe have a read of this here (http://vbulletin.thesite.org.uk/showthread.php?t=69968&highlight=ribs) - is it the same?
