I had mine removed a couple of years ago, and it wasn't too bad. I mean, it wasn't too long before I could eat again etc. It just looks kind of horrible if you look at your throat in the mirror...I wouldn't worry about it really, it will heal in no time. I don't know if its worse for adults, as I was 15 at the time....

I heard they don't like doing that operation anymore. My friend's sister is 13 and constantly has infections, but the doctors refuse to take them out.

They dont, they only took mine out because i was in hosp 3 times on a drip.

I had a really bad throat infection, and I couldnt eat/drink for a few days so I was taken into hospital. Then a couple weeks later I had em out..

I experienced something similar a few years ago. It seems the doctors now prefer only taking them out in extreme cases.

A tonsillectomy causes problems associated with removing the tonsils; and also the surgery itself.

Also there is no long term research into whether removing the tonsils decreases the incidence of fever/sore throats. Although for the Short-term it appears to work.

well i had it 7 times in 2 months, different infections...doctor just gave me option to have em out...eventually! so that should be good. its always around xmas time every year i start getting it..havent ate a proper xmas dinner for like 3 years now!!

i know its supposed to be tougher on adults, as your tonsils harden up.

panthro..you always have answers to my questions, you are very helpful! you should follow me round for a small wage, like a personally doctor

When people say its worse for adults it could just be that the are more aware than children. When I was younger I had to have grommits put in. The thought of that nowadays makes me shudder.

I'm sure it'll be alright, think of the ice cream!

see now... i've got the idea from somewhere that the purpose of the tonsils is to catch all the infectious nasty bugs that you ingest/inhale before they got down into your system and make you really ill...

Well, a thank you!! :thumb:

But before anybody shouts at me :( , I am not a Doc; student or otherwise, I am a student Nurse and give advice on my knowledge from the course and my extended knowledge. I always suggest you go to your Docs, who on the most hand are caring and professional.

I don't have the experience [yet] to diagnose people personally so through a computer I have even less chance as I proved recently with Koe_182.

Had mine out when I was 21 (many years ago lol). It does hurt for a couple of weeks afterwards but if you use a soluble form of paracetomol it's easier to manage the pain.

Ooh good luck with that.

I was 18 when I had mine out after 5 years of constantly recurring tonsilitis and sore throats. Only time i've had sore throats since is with colds, but even they aint as bad as they were.

It did hurt like hell though. I had to eat 2 slices of toast morning after the op or they wouldn't let me out of hospital. I then went and only ate ice cream and things when i got home and it just got worse and worse the pain. Got told off for it and told if I forced myself to eat hard things then they'd get better quickly. It worked a treat but certainly wasn't what i wanted to be with the pain of eating.

Glad it went well! Make sure you eat lots of toast, as much as it may hurt it helps them heal a lot quicker!

yeah, im trying to eat as normal as possible, thats what the doc said. altho i am eating a fair share of ice cream and milkshakes :D mmmmmmmmmm

managed to eat a sandwich last night tho, gonna try and have a proper lunch today.

to be honest, it is painful, but nowhere near as painful as my last few cases of tonsilitus so thats ok!

Glad it went ok. Rest lots and eat solid food and you'll be right as rain in no time. Just stay out of smokey atmoshperes for a while as well.
