Me and my mates want to go away on a group trip when we finish our exams in summer and so we came up with the idea of walking Hadrian's Wall. (Me and one mate have spoken about doing it before but now we are really getting into it with other people too) Our parents are all fine with it but we have no idea where to find out about the route and what hostels we can go to that are along the route. We have done some searches on Google but nothing seems to have really shed any light on the hostels along the route, it just gives us a few that are close-ish but they are actually way off (like 3 miles from the route). Do any of you know where we can get information on what hostels follow the route?
Thanx

I'd love to walk Hadrian's Wall and pitch a tent every so far along it as it's too far to walk in just one day.
well i know of lots of scouty people, some of who know people who have done it before, i wouldnt recommend doing it all unless you are an active hill walker
i walked the coast to coast route over 3 weeks and that almost killed me, and i do things like this often, its probly worth picking a large chunk of the walls route (but not all of it) and doing some kind of route that will start in civilisation, and finish in it again :P
i will look into it for you and see if i can glean any information
and dear lord go prepared with food and stoves etc and all sorts of stuff, you wouldnt be able to guess the number of people who majorlybugger up when doing things like this

Never done any camping before well apart from in my mate's garden when I was younger hehe, but my dad has been a scout leader and has been camping many times so if I need any advice before doing it I'd have to ask him.

I love Vindolanda
Unfortunately I have never been there without my little sisters so the visit is always mixed with their whining that it is boring.

In theory it's a wonderful idea, but in reality it really isn't the best. As Mr G says, firstly you will die. Secondly, most of the time the wall isn't actually there, and when it is it doesn't tend to look like a wall. We haven't looked after it very well on the whole and most of it got turned into stone for farms and abbeys and things. Thirdly, if you start from Segundum in Wallsend, you have to walk through Wallsend :yuck: And fourthly as you mentioned, the hostels are fairly scattered so you would need to camp.

It was hard enough for me sleeping in a tent in my mate's garden for one night when I was younger so I don't think I'll be able to cope in a tent for a few days in the middle of nowhere .

Thanks for all your help, we've now sorted something. Travelling from Newcastle to Carlisle along the wall route, but using buses out of newcastle and into carlisle. It's only about 60 miles. It's really not that far guys! 60 miles all spread out over a week, is nothing at all.

I don't think you quite appreciate how cold, windy and desolate the high pennines are. And how hard the terrain is. And how little of Hardian's Wall there is left.
Oh well. So long as you pack properly you won't need to waste Mountain Rescue's time, at least. What would worry me is how experienced you are, because although the fells along the wall are not that high, they are very exposed.

Erm...I do quite a bit of walking, have completed my silver Duke of Edinburgh.

Then you'll be fine.
The way you wrote kinda implied to me that you hadn't. And the hills up there catch out very experienced walkers sometimes.
