I have been suffering from concipation due to a side effect caused by some medicaiton that i was given. I have come off the medication and was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to releave concipation. Also when I do finally go it is extremly painfull and was wondering if anyone knew how i could reduce this pain?

Do you mean Constipation as in when you can't go to the toilet?
If not then ignore the rest of this!
Try eating more fibre, ie some all bran in the morning can help along with them new fibre drink things they are always having advertised on the teevee, they help move everything along a bit more swiftly and you can pick them up and other similar remidies in your local boots/chemist.

What medication were you given? Try eating more fibre [plenty fruit and veg etc] , drinking more water, avoid the medicated laxative tablets/syrup - may do more harm than good.

If you overuse them apparently they cause constipation?!?!?!? :eek2: That is, they cause the thing they are meant to treat.
Just don't go too mad on them, plenty fruit and veg and water and it should help. If you havent defecated in a week or the pain gets any worse you should go to the docs. :D

If you use medicated laxatives in the long term, your body gets used to them and therefore becomes lazy.
In the short term they're fine though.

your body tends to get used to the laxatives and then rely on them, eventually leading to more disruption.
swap white bread for wholemeal, prunes (i actually like these!), bran on your cereal etc.
Prunes :thumb: Apparently olives and apple juice are also good simple remedies when you're bunged up.
Looking more long term, you could try and increase the amount of fibre you eat (fresh fruit & veg, bran flakes etc).
There's no harm in taking Senna every now and then, but if you are using in regularly, you should speak to your GP really. There's plenty of things you can buy over the counter. And if pain is a problem, speak to your pharmacist about anti spasmodics used in IBS.
Also, don't ignore the 'call to stool'. In other words, go to the loo when you feel the need and try not to put it off. This can exacerbate the problem of constipation.

Don't apples have the opposite effect? i.e. when things are runnly they make it harder cos they contain fibre?

Very true, but also don't strain to empty your bowels.

Eat murray mints, like about 5 packets will loosen your bowells, same with any sugar free mints.
Otherwise, there's like St Andrews salts or somethin...
