My old lecturer at uni was thinking about moving there last time I spoke to him, he loves the place.

Most of it is relatively stable (for Africa) and quite safe, though of course their sort of war up in the North isnt going away any time soon.

I'd check with the foreign office to make sure whats going on there before traveling.

I have a friend who lives in uganda and she says its really nice - though she lived in Nairobi before so I think most places are nicer.

The war in the north is basically a load of religious nutters called the Lords Resistance Army - who are very definatly best avoided.

What are you going for and why? Kampala is quite nice, we had an office there where i used to work, and you can also go and treck through the rainforest to find gorrillas and other exciting things.

I went to Tanzania last summer to visit my girlfriend who had been on a gap year placement there, but she absolutely adored Uganda, in fact found a man there who she liked better than me causing us to split up. So I don't like it very much

Eerh, bongbudda I know it may be hard for you or anyone on these boards to believe, yes Africa is overrun with dictators, or has it's fair share of autocratic/army-led rule and corruption, but saying uganda is relatively stable (for Africa?) what does that mean? Compared to what - The Congo (Zaire), Rwanda? The West. It may surprise people there are lots of countries in Africa that are stable and ticking over nicely.Yes, they still get some aid from the Western Europe. But who doesn't - Eastern Europe certainly does. If anyone would like a list of stable frican countries I'd be happy to oblige, just ask! Thank you.

I'm on my medical elective so I'm spending 6 weeks in a small mission hospital in the the bush then on safari for 2 1/2 weeks. Planning on gorilla trekking, possibly in Rwanda, and the usual game park things.

I'll only be in Kampala for a couple days at the end.

bong, the FCO site only says the borders with the DRC is high risk.

My father used to live in Tanzania (Dar Es Salaam if anyone's interested :p), and we visited there twice, we went to Zanzibar for a few days one of the times, and to the Selous Game Reserve the other.

He's just moved to Nairobi, and I'll be visiting there, and doing some volunteer type work, for 2 weeks over summer. My mother is scared for me...I worry.
