Hi peeps.

The average NTL speed on broadband was once increased from 512k to 600k and now, to 750k.

and NOW, clicky here (http://www.ntlworld.com/data-feeds/editorial/microsites/tierMigration) to update your 750k connection to 2 MEG! The main terms and conditions still apply, where you're capped at 1GB/day. Basically, the rules remain the same, so the 1GB/day is nothing to worry about. This update is free for all members who are currently subscribed to the 750k connection (£24.99/month).

It's delicious downloading at 201.1Kb/s constant.

One problem - the 1GB a day cap is more a "soft cap" so they rearely do anything. If you're on less than 2mb you have the "hard-cap" and if you use a lot of bandwidth, they'll shunt you down to 56k speeds until the next month. I suggest you all either use AOL or get some very good net usage monitors.

Some sources say NTL will be unlimited/uncapped (rind them yourself, say you'll move to AOL and why should you stay? They'll say "unlimited" access). Others say they'll cap. It seems the idea is to shunt the heavy bandwidth users onto the same pipes and slow them down.

Be careful though - if you're in the neighbourhood with someone on the same box, and their speeds are slowing, they could compain. If NTL check it out, you'll get into trouble (no doubt a slap on the wrist and some monitoring for a while).

However, if like me the kids on the street have gone to BB and now reaped the benefits of NTL and do nothing but play online PC games, download music, use newgrounds etc etc - in the middle of the day - call NTL and get them in trouble. I'd like my line to run at 2mb speed thank you very much.

thats not true, while the 1mbit service (previously 300k service) has a monthly cap of 3gb a month it is still a soft cap.

also no-one ive spoken to knows anything about this "going down to 56k speeds if you use too much bandwidth", ive spoken to a few NTL employees and they've never heard of any such idea.

Your download speed should be around 225/230kb/s with a 2MB line, mine is.

You get 1GB/day limit - :(

Here's an updated link on the caps that will be enforced:
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/article/139/further-update--ntl-broadband-speed-increases

Cable Forum can exclusively reveal, by way of a reliable source, that the speed increases debated about so much over the last few months are about to go ahead from the 8th March, 2005.

* Important: New Update (5/03/05) Click Here

Update: ntl now appear to have changed their tune from the earlier reports with regard to the admin charge. The following now appears to be true.

* Speed increase from 750Kbps to 2Mbps—Free
* Speed increase from 1.5Mbps to 3Mbps—Free
* Speed increase from 300Kbps to 1Mbps—Free, see Below

Existing 300Kbps customers will be given the option to upgrade to the 1Mbps. But, on doing so the monthly data transfer cap will reduced from 30GB to 3GB! Some customers may therefore prefer staying on the 300Kbps service with a 30GB monthly usage allowance.
Speed and Cap information

Broadband enabled STB

* 1Mbps Download—100Kbps Upload—3GB Monthly Cap
* 2Mbps Download—200Kbps Upload—30GB Monthly Cap
* 3Mbps Download—300Kbps Upload—40GB Monthly Cap

Standalone Cable Modem (SACM)

* 1Mbps Download—100Kbps Upload—3GB Monthly Cap
* 2Mbps Download—200Kbps Upload—30GB Monthly Cap
* 3Mbps Download—300Kbps Upload—40GB Monthly Cap

Business Tarrifs

* 2Mbps Download—250Kbps Upload
* 3Mbps Download—300Kbps Upload

It is currently understood that if customers exceed the monthly cap limits as outlined above, their connection will be dropped to a speed of 56Kbps, although this isn’t confirmed.
