Why is it so much cheaper for a .COM in USA then the UK?

I noticed for example a .COM registered at 1and1.co.uk is £8.89 per year + VAT = £10.45

the same name registered at 1and1.com is $5.99 in total so roughly the same thing is 3 times more in the UK? with the same company!!

I've got a lot of domains with the UK 1and1 registered over the last 3 years and they've been a nightmare company so do you think there would be any problems moving to their USA company? or even another US company to host my names? I don't even use most of the names but reserved them as they are family surnames, etc and maybe only use them for email forwarding.

.. damn .. just when through an order and see that 1and1.com only allow people in the USA or Canada to sign up... but I'm sure there must beplenty of other US hosting companies that can take on a lot of extra domain names.
