I Know I need to ask my work about this, but I don't know when I'll get in next and just want some opinions

Right, I was due to be on a split shift today at work: 12-3 and then 6-10.30

at about 2.30 we lost power to the kitchen and I said I'd work on for a while to get as much sorted as I could (cleaning the kitchen up etc), expecting it to be sorted tonight

I came home at 3.45 and not long after I got a call saying I didn't need to go into night because it isn't fixed (the system recently got upgraded and the electrician didn't carry the spares for it) so I said ok, I'll be in tomorrow then.. but then they said it might not be fixed for tomorrow night either :nervous:

I was on time and a half today (not just me, all the staff were) and I REALLY could do with the money. It's not that I need it now, but as most of you are aware, I'm moving to Manchester in a couple weeks, and it's THEN that I need the money

Should I still get paid for it? It's not my fault I'm not at work - i.e. if I phoned in sick I wouldn't expect to be payed for it

Unfortunatley it all depends on what your contract says and by the sounds of it you are a casual worker who basically has no rights when it comes down to shifts.

I work casually for a hotel and although i work consistently every week my employers have every right to turn around and say that they don't need me! I don't have a contract!

Your best bet is to check with your employer, or if you do have a contract read it carefully!

Your contract will explain what you are entitled to, if you are unsure or don't have a contract then give ACAS a ring.

I don't have one

I'm not counted as casual because I still need to give notice etc

I never got round to having my induction.. :(

Then, like, ring ACAS.

You will find that you are contracted to a certain number of hours, on certain days, and that overtime is not guaranteed.

I got told when I went for the job that I'm only contracted for 9

my point is that, they've given me the shifts and it's not my fault that I can't work them - like they've told me not to go in

might they expect you to make the hours up?

i know it's a little different, but i work sundays and on easter sunday, we're closed. it's not my fault, obviously. but i have to either make the hours up, or take it unpaid. but least i get easter sunday off.

I only get paid for the hours I work. Sounds like you have a similar arrangement. Tough luck.

sounds like my employers odds are you wont get paid for them and theres sod all can be done about it,if you dont have a contract then it'll probably be pretty hard to get anything out of them aswel,if you were told youd only get nine hours a week then you should but if you dont have a signed copy of a contract saying so then i wouldnt hope to get paid!
