They are compressed files, quite common on *nix platforms.

You can (I think) unzip them with winzip or gnutar.

you obviously dind't try evry hard.

kinda obvious typing in tar wasn't gonna get you anything meaningful. not the greatest leap of logic to type in ".tar file" instead.

Actually even if you just put tar in the first google result for me was "GNU Tar Project".

But who knows.

And more importantly, who cares, being as the question is answered.
