Ok so I want a change, not to much of a change mind. I want to go from black to a dark chocolatey brown. Do I have to bleach my hair or can I just dye over it?
I know theres a type of shampoo that fades hair dye but I'm not sure which one.
Also can I have some cheap and cheerful tips on keeping my ends in condition. I cant afford much and I'm growing my hair so dont really want to cut it. I straighten it quite alot but I aways use heat protecter spray.
Thanks:)

if u use hair straightners and your growing your hair you should still get it trimmed every 6-8weeks to remove the ends , even if its only a quarter of an inch. deep conditioning every couple of weeks is good for your mop too.john frieda miraculous recovery or aussie three minute miracle are both good deep conditioners.
cant help with the colouring though! sorry

mine was dyed and is fading slowly dispite being permanent. I know I heard antidandruf shampoo esp head n shoulders fades colour so try that-I'd get a really really dark brown as close to black as possibel and perhsp do it weekly or two weekly til you get teh colour. Not that I tried that but its what i'd do if I wasn't so lazy as to not redye it. Mine looks awful_ i just don't feel motivated to dye!

I dont really want to be putting to much dye on it though. Wouldnt dying my hair every couple of weeks really mess it up?

Yes, you can if you're lucky! I dyed mine black by mistake and was successful in dying it a very dark brown. You might want to try a semi first though, incase it doesn't work.

I've tried dying over semi-permanent dark brown, and it didn't work.
I have been told by my hairdressers, that if I wanted to dye my hair another colour, I would have to bleach it, because of how dark it is. (Semi-permanent are basically permanent dyes).
I was also told that permanent black is notoriously difficult to get rid of and doesn't dye over. The reason why I stick to semi dark browns....
I'm using head and shoulders, and finding that the colour of the water is slightly brown every wash, which does show that it washes colour out, so it's always worth a try!!!
Other than it fading, there's little chance of it being dyed over...

how does that figure?
They have a kinda bleach sealant in them so although they fade the chemicals hang around, I think.

Ok well its quite faded as is it atm so I think a month of head and shoulders will do it. Plus I have about an inch of blonde rootage. I just fed up of black hair. I want it to look more natural but I hate my natural colour as its kind of a poo blonde/brown.

how does that figure? I was told by a stylist in Zig Zag, that all semi-permanent dyes have either ammonia, or peroxide in them. Both of which, are bleach, therefore, being more permanent than a 'wash in, wash out' toner. Semi's may fade, but you still have to 'grow them out' apparently.

i reckon that's true, actually. if you've ever tried to bleach over semi-permanent dye you'll know what i mean. the colour goes, but there's this invisible layer that refuses to change when you try to dye it the next time.
