I do.

I'm not.
But you can't blame the ones who do, most people don't have the time (or the knowledge) to learn a new OS. Microshit wouldn't be shit if they actually cared to complete development on their systems before they released them and if they weren't just after money. And if they didn't make their own software record your actions which they can retrieve at any time.

but MS works for everything i need to do, it really does

the only time these days where i use a different OS is technically when i telnet into a friends machine, which i can do the odd thing with

i respect the view of zalbor because he knows how to use another OS, but also you cant do many of the things that general people want to do, if you are using an OS other than windows

I wouldn't say people are "quite happy" to use MS operating systems when, for a lot of people, it's their only option.

It has to be said that Bill Gate$ and Micro$oft had the best of intentions with Windows - They wanted an OS that would make it easy to do anything you wanted to do. What they didn't seem to account for was all those nasty folks out there that would take advantage of this to screw everyone else over. Because of this we need anti-virus software, firewalls, anti-spyware progs and different browsers/email clients.

I'd much rather switch to a linux-based OS, but too many of the things I need (and games!) require Windows to run, and I can't be arsed rebooting into a different OS everything I want to do something else.

My OS (W2k) is running nicely just now but that's because it's a clean install. I'm sure it'll fuck up majorly and piss me off at some point over the next few weeks :)

Use OSX or Linux or don't use a computer at all. Problem solved.

even *nix has its security flaws though unquestionably no where near as many as windows

I think it gets a bit annoying everyone slating Windows ...

People like Apple have it fairly easy, they built both the OS and the hardware so they have a pretty easy job writing code to make it work.

There are just so many possible combinations of PC components, 100's of graphics card to choose from, motherboards, sound cards, CD Drives, Hard Drives, etc All the possible combinations must run into the tens of millions.

I'm surprised PC's work at all sometimes!!

Lots of people complain about windows but who's come up with anything easier for home users to get to grips with and that works with as much hardware?

nix might even have more flaws than windows, most of windows problems tend to be errors with particular bits of coding, where never usually in inherant flaw, nix if it ever starts getting worth trying to hack on a major scale, people might discover new holes

Actually most of the problems with windows are down to design flaws centered arounf "ease of use" - yes the bug is in the graphics module in the word processor, but why the heck is the word processor allowed to alter the system configuration? Yes, you can set up some permissions under windows, ut as windows and its apps aren't designed for this, its really difficult to get it working correctly

This is a good argument against hetrogenous environments, but flawed.

Windows runs a minority of web sites, but the majority of compromised web sites were running on windows.

Most email servers are run on platforms other than windows, but most hijacked email servers are Exchange.

Microsoft push the TCO issue, which says that any idiot can set up an exchange and IIS server, so you don't need to pay someone who knows what they are doing. This tends to mean that IIS and Exchange get set up by idiots, and are set up in insecure ways.

There are more holes are found against windows because they are simply easier to find. Despite the source code for many of the *n*x subsystems being available.
