The problem i've got is recently my PC starting running slowly, starting getting stuck a little when it got busy doing a few things minimizing and maximising screens got slow and internet exlorer got slow and other normal processes slowed. So i did a test on the maching and found that one of my HD had a 3m/b transfer rate and usually should be about 23/mb a sec.

So im thinking it's dieing, ive defraged it cleaned the Temp files etc and still no joy and its noth that full. Its an 120gig maxtor drive. I also have a 40gig maxtor in but that has all the windows files etc along with Office etc and the other drive is for my personal use Music games etc.

Im wanting to know if you think the drive needs replacing and how you'd go about it as im not really wanting to lose all the stuff on the dodgy drive !!

Any help much appreciated

THANKS ASH :)

p.s if it needs replacing which dive would you suggest for best value for money 120gig, what makes a better drive from another besides size THANKS AGAIN !

How old is it?

If you look in the event viewer are there any error messages related to the drive?

Best bet is to either burn things to cd/dvd or put your new drive in, partition it and copy everything across except windows, then remove your broken drive and install windows onto the first partition in your new drive.

Think the disk is about a year old. windows it on a seperate H/D (40gig one). The with all my crap on that you never want to get rid of is on the one with the slow transfer rate. Is there anything it could be that ive not already said that is causing the slow down ??? If not what HD would you reccommend ?? What do you look for in a disk besides size ??

Thanks

Data transfer rates will vary, so it could be ok in other areas of the disk.

if you have xp/2000 then look at the event viewer should tell you if the drive is really dying or not. These days the SMART prediction is pretty accurate and windows will log if there are significant read/write errors.

Your drive is still fairly new. You should check its serial number on maxtor's site to see if it is still under their warranty. If it is you can RMA it to them and they will repair any defects.

If I was getting a new drive now, then I would go for serial ATA that is not quite the top end of the spectrum, because the really high capacity ones don't last as well under heavy usage.

Start --> Run --> type "eventvwr" and press enter.

Then click on "system"

hard drive errors will show up in there if there are any. Look for exclamation marks and crosses.
