Are you using the firewall? Is it set up to allow the sharing?
set the first network card as an IP of 192.168.0.1
set the second network card as an IP of 192.168.0.2
set both of them to have a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0
set both of them to have the gateway as 192.168.0.1

if you have zonealarm free on there it wont work, since that doesnt work on networks
do you have any antivirus running?
and why do you need a class A subnet???? i normally do 255.255.255.0
Aye, the subnet is wrong, it should be 255.255.255.0
One of them shouldn't have the gateway as itself, that makes no sense.
yes i got the subnet thingy wrong, but one having the gateway as its own IP does work as i have tried it in the past
you do have both network cards enabled?

Im using sygate personal firewall and i havent configured that yet, do i have to?
Also the IP addresses are already 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2.
I am using AVG freeware for an antivirus, that ok?
Ahhhh the frustration!!
The unconfigured firewall is probably preventing sharing. Turn it off and see if stuff works then, if it does, then the firewall is the problem.

The last time i turned my firewall off i got riddled with viruses.
Shall i stop my broadband first?

the pc with internet, use that computers ip as gateway on both

re: virus'
yes what is up with the internet!! virus central...
firewalls have got to learn to allow LAN filesharing... it sucks having to turn your firewall off to see other computeres on the network...
if that is your problem RB.. try this... turn off your firewall.. then check control panel-->ADMINSTRATIVE TOOKS --> local secutiy policy --> allow logon
and make sure all the permisions are set just fine (especially make sure theres no users listed in 'deny logon locally'... try turning the guest account on too.
if you need help i had hell with my XP LAN.. mostly due to a firewall, but also due to permission problems...
write back if not sorted. alex but fuck me the web's riddled with virus's at the merment.. I just wish they'd all fuck off and get a life... who wants to encode a fucking virus enyway

God damn thing still wont work!! I might just take both computers apart and shove them both in one case (within reason of course). Would be so much easier.

an idea would be to set up the network from scratch rather than try and fix the problem
do you get what youre supposed to do
connect them with crossover cable
assign them an ip address in the same range, turn off the windows firewall for the one without net
tell your proper firewalls to allow eachother

If you go to microsoft knowledge base - they have loads of really easy to follow tutorials on all sorts of bizzare problems and if they dont' have one for your problem then you can email them and they will find out for you

Thats is pretty much what i done, both computers say they are connected and fine but i cant access eachothers hard drive even though they are shared.

So you still cannot connect to the net from one of the PC's?

I can still connect to the internet with the main PC that is fine. But i cannot access either PC's hard drive when they are shared. Also cannot access the net from the other PC.

Have you set sharing permissions and are you using a router?
RudeBwoy

Iv set the sharing permissions for both computers to see eachother and im using a crossover cable, no router.

Rude, what exactly have you done so far?

I installed a NIC 10/100 card on both PC's and plugged in a direct crossover cable in either card.
I then switched both computers on and let them automatically install the cards (winXP).
I then run the add network connection wizard and network setup wizard on the initial PC which went fine. Then run the network setup computer on the second computer which went fine.
I shared the drives on either computer with full permissions and disabled my firewall along with my internet.
I opened Entire network thing to view the other computer but it sat there thinking for about 30 seconds then timed out.
Both PC's say they are connected and there dont seem to be a problem apart from they cant see eachother.

Try going into your file and printer sharing poperties, click browse master & on the right use the drop down menu and select enable. It will take a short amount of time for both PCs to figure out who is master, then see if you can share.
Also if you search for a computer does it find any on your network?

1styl never use windows wizard for networks, also id ceck whether it enable the windows firewall on the non internet one
you need to assign them similar ips dont let windows do it
network connection--->lan card--->properties--->tcp/ip, advanced---> assign ip address yourself
192.168.0.1 for internet one, 192.168.0.2 for the other one and set gateway as 192.168.2.1
and check your norton/mcafee/whatever firewalls to see if they allow traffic from the 2 computers, normally the issue, oh and make sure the 2 computers are in the same workgroup bu right clicking on my computer/properties
should work
ps - attached is what my one looks like.... but i use different ip addresses

I'd obtain the IP settings automaticlly, well, just try it. Also, did you get any settings from your ISP to input to your LANs control panel?
RudeBwoy
21-01-2005, 08:31 AM
Sorry forgot to mention, i set the IP's on either computer as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 but didnt put the DNS thing in. I use Sygate Personal Firewall and the options are quite limited in there with networks etc.
I got no settings from my ISP with LANs.
Makoto

Phone your ISP and see what they say about settings, tell them your LAN ain't working, they will help you.

so is it just file sharing across the network that doesnt work, or doesnt internet work on computer without modem as well
and if its free sygate it may not be too good with networks ,most free firewalls dont work on networks, zonealarm free doesnt for sure

Are there any decent firewalls out there or am i gonna have to pay?
Makoto

Thanks for all your help guys but iv given up. Iv basically shoved both computers in one case and i got a mean machine now (compared to my older PC).
I really do appreciate your efforts and hopefully it will help someone else with network problems.
Cheers guys :thumb: :thumb:
