Well what kind of Linux (or Unix) do you use, and why? - Do you think that certain types are better at some things and worse at others?
I'm just downloading knoppix to put an old PC I have next to me, eventually I will put Gentoo on it (when I get an ethernet card for it).
Doesn't Knoppix run of a CD?
I've tried it and it don't seem to run well on old machines if at all

Its only until I get the chance to get a network card.... i think you may be able to install knoppix from the CD so it runs better... i dont know I'm going to find out now
Fedora is the new redhat open source offering. Redhat no longer exists as an open source linux project.
I have Fedora Core 3 upstairs. It's ok, fairly user friendly, but I suppose it depends what you want out of your linux distro.
Fedora is also pretty up to date and includes a few new features that may not be standard in other distros.

debian definately gets my vote, apt-get and apt-upgrade being the key factors why

apt-get dist-upgrade :-)
I prefer debian because it works, It's not very user-friendly after the apt-get part, but it's solid as a rock, woulden't use it for a workstation though, the stable packages are far too old :)
would probably use knoppix for desktop, or SuSe

I have only tried Fedora 1 and 3, and Mandrake 10.1. I'm using Fedora 3 because it has more options than Mandrake, and also Mandrake had some weird issues with my computer. Apart from that, the main reason I'm using this distribution is because it was recommened to me.

Although Zalbor has mentioned it now, I knew straight away that Mandrake is missing off the list. I thought that Mandy was one of the most obvious ones. I've not attempted any distribution of Linux though.
BTW, do you pronounce Linux as:
Linnucks or
Lie nucks
?
I've always pronounced it Linnucks.

That's how Linus (the creator) pronounces it, so I consider this to be the right way.
