I was just wondering what do people think about this, I am watching bbc1 now and this program just mentioned it again.
I think it is disgusting to lock someone away for something they cant to control, ok fine they can take certain steps but if a child walks out of school what can the parents do? How on earth does throwing them in jail benefit anyone? i really dont understand this government

Rather encourages them to their responsibilities to actually RAISE the little hooligans, as opposed to simply be a baby factory to over tax the system, does it not?

give 'em a clip round the ear 'ole and you could go to jail ...they ignore your your polite requests for them to get their fucking arses in school and stay there ...and you go to jail!
fortunately ...it's just been voted against so we can continue to give the brats a little slap ...but not for much longer.
we won't be able to hunt with dogs much longer ...we won't be able to have a smoke in public ...we won't be able to have a 4x4 ...we won't be able to fucking breath without asking the politicaly correct mob first.
by the way i did go out and buy that 4x4 ....fuck 'em.

Well, I think that if you raise your children well, and instil morals and values on them, then they're going to go to school whether they really like it or not.
Of course, if they're not going because they're being bullied rather than because they're lazy little feckers then that is another issue entirely. And by bullied I don't mean 'teacher picks on me 'cos I don't do me homework' or rubbish like that.
Sending the mothers/fathers to prison is a very last resort. The mere threat of someone sending my mother to prison for something I'd done (or in this case hadn't done) would get me straight back to school. Obviously the children who are prepared to let their parent go to prison because of their behaviour is probably beyond help.

It's a last resort and the various agencies try alternates before resorting to committal proceedings.
You have to remember that it is, and had been for years, illegal not to ensure that your children attend school.
What this action does in reinforce the parental responsibility aspect because there are those who do not take that seriously. Usually though, by the time it gets to this stage it is already too late and you can usually find that the parent has never taken responsibility for anything...

i think its a good idea. i never once played truant because i knew it would look bad on my parents and i never would have dreamed of bringing them that shame.
