Ive written this before but cant find it so i'll write it again.
Here goes.
Basically i hear lots of different comments about NTL, some people say its crap, other people say its the best ISP around - why is this?
Theres basically two user groups for people using NTL broadband, the first is what i call the family user group, they use the internet regularly, but dont use it to excess.
The second group is what i call "the power user" group, people in this group use their connections CONSTANTLY 24/7, both downloading and uploading (normally things like winmx, bittorrent e.t.c, you know what i mean).
If you're in a area which mostly has the "family user group" then you'll be fine, internet browsing will be fast, downloads fast, ping times good, no packet loss e.t.c (luckily i'm in this group)
and if you're in a area where the majority of the users are "power users" then this is where all the complaints start rolling in. Because everyone around you is using their connection 24/7 the UBR (think of it like a switch or hub (where internet traffic goes through to get to its desitination) gets overloaded, this means that the internet for everyone that is connected to your UBR (normally the local area around you) will be slow, some sites will be unresponsive, downloads will be slow, you will get packet loss, ping times poor e.t.c but UBR's dont come cheap, so thats why NTL introduced its 1gb a day policy (even though its only a soft cap, i think it was only put it to warn people not to use their connections 24/7)
For the above reasons is why people call NTL crap, and why they call NTL good, but if you live in a poor area i can hardly see it being NTL's fault as to why your connection is soo poor, its the people around you being greedy with their connections.
And because of this i wouldnt really recomend NTL as someone whos looking for a broadband ISP, because theres no way of knowing which groups the people who live around you belong in, for example you could end up having NTL broadband installed and then realising that everyone around you abuses their connections to the max, making your connection poor.
I am with NTL yes, i have the 1.5mbit service, and luckily im in area where most people just their connection sensibly.

Throughout this you make it sound like the power users are greedy im sorry but i pay for 1.5mbps and im sure when it was 1mb i could get 8gb a say so in theory i should be able to get 12gb a day if i pay for it im going to use it.
Its like buying a motorbike and riding it at 10% of the speed i know its a bad example but you see what i mean.
If NTL want to offer 1.5MBps they should damn well make sure everyone can get ~180kb/s downstream constantly otherwise whats the point they may as well have stuck with the 750kbs speed and not put a hindrance on their network

they ARE greedy, think about it, what could you possibly be doing thats legal and requires you're connection to be on 24/7 ...?
there goes, mp3, videos, dvd, games downloading, streaming media and video of copyrighted content... e.t.c, the list goes on...
and you say about the motorbike, you're probably right, there are speed limits in the UK you know.
i suppose you think if someone left a tap on 24/7 to power a water sprinkler then they wouldnt be greedy.. sure

No these examples are not fair,
a bike couldnt go 100% without blowing up and water is a natural resource and is totally different to bandwidth.
Who gives a shit if its legal i mean jeses theres a section on this board that is titled drugs yet they arnt legal and yes i coudl find legal things to be downloading 12gb a day and the simple answer would be porn. Not the nicest of examples but get yourself a subscription to a few good porn sites and you could easily legally be maxing out your connection for days/weeks months even. Lets be fair thats the backbone of the internet anyways.
Am sorry just dont think its greedy using something a company claims it can give you when you pay for it. If you pay a sky subscription you expect to get all the channels you pay for without interuption its not like because you watch tv 24/7 you should be expected to get dodgy reception or whatever

Can anyone get Pipex or is it limited to certain parts of the UK? I was gonna go with them but ended up with BT. Can;t grumble tbh, never had any porbs with them and tech support have always been very good. Just don't like paying 30 quid p/m coz I'm a tight arse.

NTL has a 1G/b a day download limit? What happens when you reach that limit? Does it cut your internet off? How much is NTL a month?
Is Tesco's worth going with?

yes there is a soft limit, but once you go over it, nothing happens.
and to this date NTL havnt contacted anyone about going over this limit.
Most of the places with limits only approach people if they are consistently going over the limit (IE every day).

the way things are going now, you are very lucky if you find an ISP with no bandwidth limit. A few months ago it was a different story, but now, even the small ISPs are introducing download limits.
