Gland at the base of the neck that produces hormones which control the metabolic rate (how much energy the body uses) and level of calcium in the blood.

yus it's a gland that produces a hormone called thyroxine..

when it's underactive it doesn't produce enough so you have to take thyroxine tablets as a substitute. having a underactive thyroid gland makes you very very tired - and usually fat (not me though :p )

over active you're generally hyper all the time

You're a very useful individual:)

So by taking thyroxine tablets this then makes you control the thyroid & you don't feel tired or get fat?

Is a thyroid a genetic thing?

I didn't get fat anyhoo - In fact I lost a stone

It's not genetic - just unlucky :(

The thyroxine tablets replaces what it should be making

I still get tired but when I've been taking my tablets it's not as bad - I can usually stay awake all day :D

there is different doses of thyroxine - they start you off on a small dose and then you should really get a a thyroid function test every 3 months to see if you're taking it at the right level

Just to clarify - it's normal to have a thyroid gland ;). It's not normal for it to be under- or over-active.
