Ok... so here goes. Yeah so this question springs from the whole England Vs Wales football match we were graced with recently. Obviously in from Wrexham which (for people who don't know) is about 15 minutes from the boarder of Wales and I work in a sports bar... Anyway...
Why is there so much hostility between England and Wales?
There was this one guy and he was yelling/half singing "we are the England haters!" Looking at me, then he asked if I was English and I said "does it matter? I'm working here now" and he carried on chanting how he hates the English glaring at me and finally I asked
"why?" And he reply was.
"Because we do!" And again I asked for a reason and he turned around and said "You're a fucking student, are you a student????" I said I wasn't... he walked off.
Really I can't understand it, the England/Wales hostility, especially in towns such as Wrexham where hardly anybody seems to know the words to the national anthem, or the language or the history of Wales. Perhaps people in Scotland and Ireland know kinda what the story is...
So, is nationality that important to us? Does national pride lead to hatred of other countries? Will we ever be able to move on from the past and perhaps unite?
Would Wales stand a chance if it became its own country or would the economy die?

Pissed people at football matches don't count.
The Welsh hate the English because they see the English as "invaders".
The English just pity the Welsh. Most of Wales (well, the inhabited bit) is a toilet.

I stayed in Rhyl for a few months and didn't get any grief off the locals for being English.

I only been to Wales once ages ago and can’t really remember. The common complaint I’ve heard about the Welsh though is that in many parts if you’re in say a pub or a shop you’ll hear Welsh people speaking in English and then when they see someone English come in they’ll start speaking in Welsh.
That seems a bit childish to me.
My mate is from Cardiff and always moans about the Welsh stuff. Part of the reason he moved here to live with his dad he said was cos he didn’t want to do GCSE Welsh.
Oh and one thing that puzzles me is when you go to the DVLA website you have to select English or Welsh! Now don’t try and tell me Welsh is the second most commonly spoke language in the UK.

It's the second most-widely indigenous language. Ahead of, um Cornish.
None of these foreign languages should be on any Government literature, if they can't be arsed to learn English thety should piss off home.

I know this is about Wales but...in my opinion, no. Just look 2 hours north of where I sit and you'll see your answer. I think there will always be hatred/rivalry between all the countries in the British Isles. There are people who fought in battles on either side still alive, and then there will be their children, and theirs and so on. It's fucking stupid but....I dno't think we'll ever get over it. We, as in everyone. Not the Irish. :p

I don't know much about the history, but the English have shat on Wales from a a big height for a number of years. I think it used to be illegal to speak Welsh (someone correct me if I'm wrong), Thatcher devasted many communities during the miners strike, many of which haven't recovered, etc etc

Rhyl had the potential twenty years ago to become the blackpool of wales but ...because it was english money that was going to transform it ...the nationalists decided to keep it looking and smelling like a toilet.
the story of Rhyl ...should be warning enough not to vote for plaid.
