...and this is the fork ok?
todays paper ...teachers are having to teach children how to use a bleedin't knife and fork now!
what is happening at home then?
i know about junk food and finger snacks but some parents ...well i just don't fink they should be.
are we mass producing muppets or what ...is this evolution?

I think thats just plain stupid, parents should have a book or something of what they need to teach their own kids, I mean its obvious that its not the schools job to teach them most of this stuff.

they'll be potty training five year olds next.
i find it hard to believe that kids don't know how to use friggin eating utensils ...and they fink that nuffin matters ...how can they spend all those years at school and come out speaking like that?
we are going backwards ...how ...why?
luke ...please don't blame the government!

Teachers have always had to do it.
I do actually believe that kids are sent to school too early.

I remember in Primary School that if I didn't use my knife and fork I would get shouted at, also, I had to eat all my food or else I would be shouted at again.

Forcing kids to eat everything, regardless of anything.
No wonder we have a generation of eating disorders.

No wonder we have a generation of eating disorders. It's true. I was given apple pie every week, I hate it, but I had to eat it. My little brother and sister go my old primary school and apprantly the same witch still does the same thing.

well i never went to primary school but have managed to grasp the knife/fork concept, in 3rd year of degree as well so it can't have made a lot of difference, i just got 5 more years of my childhood to enjoy.

You forgot to blame immigrants. Plank.
It's got nothing to do with that. At all.
It's because mum isn't at home any more- the parents aren't there to have the meal, to teach the kids. They have to work instead, otherwise they lose the house.

Sorry, are you in the same sphere of reality as us?
The problem has got nothing to do with "druggies"- if it did, it wouldn't be a problem, as it would be so small an issue.
If kids have latch-key parents, parents don't have the time to teach how to use a knife and fork, they don't have the time to cook good wholesome family meals, they don't have time to mop up all the accidents before the kid gets the grasp of it.

They have nothing to do with 95% of what you say, but you still blame them.

I think the strains of a lone parent family, which are becomming increasingly present in our society possibly due to teenage pregnancy, that the strain makes lots of things harder. For one thing, money. For another, time. And these are things which you need to give a child the best upbringing it can have. Sure, plenty can do fine without money, or without seeing their parents, but when you see wealthy young proffessionals who work from home looking after their kids and everything - you know that as long as the kid isn't spoilt they're going to go far. Or at least, should go far.
Whereas in families where the parents had a low standard of education, thus a low income, thus have to work more and have less time with the kids, then the kid is (for some unknown reason?) less likely to acheive than the 'rich kid' who has everything. It's a cycle I think.

yeah and if we legalise drugs it wouldn't be a problem at all.
my initial assumption I saw trying to say is that the parents are far too busy to look after their kids like around here.... they smoke, do drugs and drink 24/7.

Luke - problem with the drugs and booze thing is this: most of these families who we so easily foresake as bad parents etc, are in a poverty trap. They HAVE to work to feed the children. They can't go out and get cleverer to get a better job, so they take your mcjobs and everything that makes the young executives (like ourselves) be able to afford that cushy chair.
The vast majority of any money they earn will go on the children and the home and the bills. And remaining will probably go on things like you said, but this remaining is so small it's almost insignificant. Like, a packet of cigarrettes is so expensive, they can't afford to smoke.
They aren't geniuses, however, and don't know the ins and out of financial management. Which is why so many get caught out with 'miracle' store cards and credit cards - money when you need it, not when you have it. They have no way out, other than saving a tiny bit each week and going to evening classes and working REALLY hard. Even at that, it's going to take a hell of a lot of luck.
So in my opinion, I think it's a bit rash to blame it on drink and drugs, but I will concede I don't know the people in your area. Just seems odd that people would rather pay for drugs than food. I guess the habit can get that bad...

I know how to use cutlery, and both my parents worked when I was at school.
We just ate when whichever one was cooking returned from working.

I think they should be taught to use a knife and fork, to sit up straight and to eat with their mouths closed. To wait for everyone to arrive before they start eating and to eat healthily.
Good manners go a long way and there's nothing more repulsive than people smacking their lips when they eat.

Yes, of course they do. Every single person in stoke is off their tits on smack and beer, with a pack of Marlboros in their mouth.
The problem is not the druggies, because there AREN'T THAT MANY! The problem is that the middle classes are increasingly finding it hard to find the time to teach kids, to cook for kids, to clean up when dinner ends up on the floor because the kid hasn't mastered the knife and fork yet.

In addition to rolly's post, there are standard levels that everyone can agree on, not shoving loads into your mouth and chewing with your mouth wide open. It's simply not attractive, things change in different situations, at a business dinner you don't get drunk and you don't hold everyone else up for their next course.
