Its a growing trend, people see Subway franchisees are making money so invest in their own.

Subway is one of these big 'cool' 'in' things at the moment (at least here anyway!) I doubt the majority of this trend will last.

They're fast food stores. Instead of burgers they specialise in rolls with French bread with diverse fillings.... what is known in Spain as 'bocadillos' (but not nearly as good).

Sadly our towns and cities have been long destroyed by they endless proliferation of McDonalds, Burger King and KFC 'restaurants' so it won't make much difference.

Funnily enough there was a report out the other week titled 'clone towns', in which some think-tank warned that our towns and cities all look the bloody same now with the same chain stores populating every high street (Next, Gap, McShite and so on).

spooky! :D

Computer at home is slow as hell and I'm going to bed anyway but if you search the BBC news website for 'clone towns' or something like that you should be able to find the article.

Nighty night.

Yeah we've just got one too which is rather worrying...we havn't even got a starbucks so why a no starbucks town like Middlesbrough would need a Subway is beyond me.

It just adds to the growing trend of unhealthy fast food really doesn't it

Bearing in mind that one of Subway's main selling points is the fact it aims to sell healthy food?

There's two in Durham, there's a third opened in Newcastle (to go with the four Starbucks).

They sell sub sandwiches for a greatly inflated price.

In theory there is nowt wrong with it, but it pains me how, at least in Newcastle, there are no decent little cafes left- they're all McCorporate chain shite. Places like Subway are OK, I guess, but they don't replace a good little cafe.

In Eldon Square shopping centre a small chain called Puccino's had a cafe, it was nice, good food. It's now a fucking Pizza Hut.

good old fashioned home cooked grub kinda cafes.

The trouble is, the corporate places open three or four in a short distance in order to shut all the otehr places down.

And it works- people go to Starbucks or Subway because they recognise the name, and know what they're getting. People are hooked by the name, they become McPeople.

All town centres are the same, it's just always a variation on the same shit. There's HMV, a Topshit, a Next, etc etc...

No character and no soul.

Durham still is OK for independent shops, but then Durham City Council go and get advertising gurus in, who trun around and say that it can only become a top tourist attraction when all the High Street chains are in.

It's what people want, they always want everything to be the same. Eat the same, drink the same, wear the same, drive the same. It's like something out of Stepford Wives.

Here's the article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3582704.stm)

If I might add chain pubs to the list. Fucking hate chain pubs. O'Neill's and the likes...

I'd exclude J D Wetherspoon from that list, simply because they always seem to buy old buildings that re derelict and renovate them.

And they serve good cheap ale from local producers:D

My lousy town council refused one of those to be built. They sound nice though.

hmmmmmmmm Subways. I love them, they are more expensive but on the whole they are healther than McCrap etc. Also the people they attract are slightly differant so there are no screaming babies etc Which is nice.
Nothing beats a Greasy spoon though, and on the subject of Jd Shite hole, i'm deffo not a fan. I used to like them, but as the drinks are so cheap there a shit loads of drunk fuked up people in there all the time and without the place heaving on a friday night it can seem dull as they never have music etc.

The big ones don't have drunks in, because they have door staff. ASll city centre pubs are filled with drunks on a Friday and Saturday night, it's just what happens.

Them not having music is a good thing, trust me. I like to be able to hear what the person sitting next to me is saying- all the best pubs don't play music. You're just too young to appreciate it;)

It depends how you define "traditional"...no music, good ale, that's traditional.

The ones round here are anyway:D

Oh, and the biggest one is a converted disused cinema in Cambridge:p

I stand corrrected

The one here is an old theater, its pretty neat. Thay have ripped out the stalls as such and made a massive bar, and then some glass stairs go up through the centre and the balcony is made into a upstairs that looks out over the bar.
Its a lot nicer than the one in my hometown, but I think it says it all when they have a ring of riot police around it on match days and recently thay have forced it to close to stop violance after matches.

there will be no family businesses soon. none at all. in most towns the big stores have killed the butcher the baker and the candlestick maker. few hardware shops can compete with the giants. less choice and less oportunity for all of us.
the streets are now a reflection of the production line ...we are now a reflection of the production line ...J uses the word soul a lot ...and rightly so. life is becoming souless. empty. meaningless.
along with it goes false tits ...man made faces ...there will be no such thing as beauty.

Hi *steps timidly into politics forum* don't hurt me!

Ok so my city-Wolverhampton has had a Subway as long as I have gone there (12 years or so) and to be honest it just plods along quietly. Not a big attraction. There is a very busy MC Donalds but its populated by either families or kids hanging out. I don't go there as I don't like the food-I guess I'm lucky I know about the local sandwich shop-ideally situated by my uni! Its not a chain place, it does an excellent bariety of food-very very varied-not like your basic 10 choices in most sandwich shops. It does do well as students like the place-more kitsch than the loud and trashy McD.

I guess in my city, subway is a very small player. So I can't oan about how many there are-because theres only one and its unobtrussive (sic).

Now onto pubs-the o'neils is pants and full of eegits-it is next door to wetherspoons. Wetherspoons is a pub of two types in Wolves-in the day its a harmless full of old people pub-but of night it attracts undesirables-such a shame. Still they stay out of mine so I don't care! The sacry thing is--the pub has got a reputation for being a hooligan pub-esp as a wolves fan stabbed a west ham (or vice versa) last season. Since then its gone downhill and filed with burberry types who are banned from the ground. Again such a shame.

The reason why cities are becomig clones of each other is because the "ordinary" person doesn't value originality. They'll drink at a cafe for ten years, but the second a Starbucks opens across the street then they'll be off like a flash. It's the same with sandwich shops, anything.

Newcastle has some very good little shops, there's one butty shops that's wonderful, but general;ly it's corporate sell-out. Why?

Because corporate is what people want. They want to know what they're getting- it may be bland crap, but at least it won't be awful.
