Hi, i was just wondering if legally a room has to have a light. the reason im asking is that i moved into a house which has a large room that was split in two so one room has the main light and my side of the room or my room hasnt, i was just wondering if i could ask the landlord to get me a light installed. cheers :D

by the way i was just wondering if there were any usefull links to let me know legally what we can ask our landlord to do to make sure the house is up to standards, my room doesnt have a door handle either.

You shouldn't have moved in without checking these things first.

i only noticed today, you would expect to find a light in a room :crazyeyes so i didnt really notice it

you need to consult the HMO (houses of multiple occupants) licences in your area.

You need to pay a visit to either your students' union or your local branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau.

If the property is not up to habitable conditions then you will ahve a case, whether lighting counts or not is unclear.

There are two things you must do, however. You must take date-stamped photographic evidence of all defects, and notify the landlord IN WRITING.

Next time, check the property thoroughly before signing a shorthold tenancy agreement.

The new tenants of our old place in Durham are in for a lovely shock in September, it's a hovel now we've taken all our nice things away :lol:

its alright, the landlord called around yesterday with the builder. the work is getting carried out in the next few days. he said that he was expecting to get all the work done before we moved in but a couple of the fellas were on holidays so they should have it done by the end of the week.
