How do people go from 'seeing each other' to being boyfriend/girlfriend? Is it just assumed?

I think it depends on the relationship as to how it happens

My girlfriend and I had been seeing eachother in town for about a month and texting and chatting on MSN. I kind of presumed and so did she but she just said "so are we official then". I said "yes" . Simple as that! :)

In my opinion, it's when you say 'will you go out with me?' and they say yes. Of course, in a relationship where it's developed naturally and you don't ask a question, I guess you'd have to talk about it.

It has to be when the relationship feels serious enough, when feelings are too strong and it would hurt if they went with anyone else.

Yeah I can see your point but feelings do take time to develop. I was going out probably with my current girlfriend for a month or two before I felt really strong feelings for her but before this I considered her as my girlfriend and officially she was because I wasn't seeing anyone else and it was "exclusive" if you know what I mean?

it just kinda happens, i think. one day you'll just be 'seeing how things go' and then the next someone will refer to him as 'your boyfriend', or to you as 'his girlfriend', and you'll look at each other, and smile, and be thinking the same thing. if you're close, it doesn't even need to be spoken about sometimes, you just know.
otherwise, yeah, a little chat. the 'are we an us?' talk.
i suggest you don't ask an adult 'will you go out with me?', because his response will be something like 'yeah, sure. where do you want to go?'

Btw, I agree with Kaff. Why does everything have to be qualified, quantified and neatly labelled?? Weirdness! Just let it be what it will be.

 I agree. Its the nicest way for it to happen as well because actually bringing it up in a conversation can be really horrible if he didn't think it had got that serious.

It can be either. With my current bf it was just assumed. Even after a month of something or seeing each other I never said the word bf or gf (lol incase he'd freak out and run) then I was talking to him on the phone and I heard him tell his friend at the same time " I'm talking to my girlfriend " I was like blessssss!:D

Aww, that must be a nice feeling. :)
I was told the other night 'I kinda want you to be my girlfriend but I think we should take it slowly, we'll reasses the situation in a few weeks'.... some men really have a way with words, lol!

i really hate the seeing each other thing, mostly because with my fiance he had just broken up with a chick the night we got together and everytime i would ask him if we "Go out" he would say he didn't know if he was ready yet.and i got to tell you,it really sucked because if people would call me his gf he would correct them and stuff and i normally called him my bf,so it was real confusin, and with years of this i am suprised i stuck around, but i am glad i did otherwise would never have gotten to this point, someone asked me the other day if i was sure if we are engaged if had actually asked me a serious question regarding us,i just laughed and said, yes i am sure
