What range of skin care products have you tried in the past for Acne and did any of them really work?

Done the whole clearasil and oxy range and none really did much when I was a teenager.

I always kinda wondered if they're really meant to work anyway cos if they did then people would buy less of it.

Also would love to have my own range of products as I know what works and what doesn't after all these years .. anyone know where I can find out more info on the rules and regulations involved in selling such products? ... I saw on TV something like only 2% of teenagers with Acne ever went to see their doctor.

Accutane worked good for me. Even though I had to get blood drawn and I couldn't wear lotion with oil in it :( My skin was constantly burning for 6 months but now, my skin is much better

I've always wondered if Pro-Activ works. I've seen lots of infomericals about it but never bothered to order it and give it a shot. If anyone has tried it before, let me know. :thumb:

Never used it myself, but lots of people have said that it's really good. I think it's quite expensive though, isn't it?

Clearasil and stuff like that helped my acne but didn't clear it right up but i've been on Dianette for over a year now and my skin is so much clearer.

I was prescribed a cream with 10% benzyl peroxide and now I;m older I use my bro's 5% for the spots I still get. I never bothered with the oxy, clearasil etc as I could get the other one with a prescription for free, whereas the brands never worked for me and also were costly!

i don't believe in skin care products really.
thing is, when you're a teenager you have ridiculous amounts of hormones flying about every-which-way so of course you're gonna get spots.

always been a big believer in drink lots of water, wash your face before and after bed and cocoa butter.

i don't get lots of spots but get the odd few.
these things are different for each person though.

Well you're lucky then .. some people get loads and they can be quite painful if they appear over a boney area.

I find if I do get any it's more to do with a lack of sleep more then anything else

I heard they can decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills but ask your dermatologist to be safe.

Wow, having seen your pic like months ago (spoke to you a few times too!) I would never have guessed that you had been on accutane because your skin looks perfect. The coincidence is that I was on it too, I finished 13 months ago and it worked for me. I still get the odd spot but to compare it to how it used to be.... well to be honest if I showed you a pic fron today and one from 18 months ago I kid you not yo wouldn't realise it was the same person unless I told you.

Go to your doctor and explain not only the problem but also the way you feel about it. Doctors understand (or should!) the psychological effects of something like acne. You don't have to suffer in silence, if you feel like crying about it (and I did cry about it several times which i am not afraid to admit, it was disfiguring at its worst) then you need to do something about it. Ask the GP to send you to see the dermatologist at the hospital and they will sort you out, it's not something you just have to accept as a part of your life, you can do something about it. If deemed severe enough then you may well be given roaccutane, which you should go for, because it could change your life. It did mine. Good luck and any questions give us a shout because I know more than is healthy about acne and treatments etc! If you fancy giving something a go before going to the hospital, go to www.acne.org and give the method a go, it involves only OTC products and works an absolute treat for a lot of people, it could really help you. However, if your spots are large and 'under the skin' types which hurt and are inflamed, don't hesitate in going down the dermatologist route, because that sort of acne will require something only he can prescribe, most likely roaccutane. I would show you a picture of me before I took it, but my pride won't let me, I ripped up my year 11 school photo from school because I couldn't look at it. Roaccutane is a life saver, give it a go.

I used to get them as a teenager and then when i went on the combined pill they became worse for two years. Over the last year my face cleared up as my hormones settled down when i came off the pill but unfortunately i've just started the mini pill and they've come back with a vengence on my face and front :( That acne link is really helpful museman, will read through properly later.

Yeah give it a go Carolina, the testimonials page is testament (surprisingly enough lol) to the amount of people it has helped. As I say it doesn't involve any expensive things or anything like that, give it a go. Also it isn't a commercial venture, it's a totally free and open site by a guy called Dan Kern who himself is a sufferer (ex-sufferer should I say) who simply aims to help other people. The regime is based on Benzoyl Peroxide which is a cream available OTC, it only uses a 2.5% cream, and the thing about it is that the 2.5% is actually more effective than higher percentage creams which actually are counter-productive because they irritate and over-dry the skin, causing more acne. Most people use either Oxy on the spot BP cream, Neutrogena cream or Quinoderm cream. The only thing Dan sells is a BP solution of his own, he did this because buying the likes of Oxy and Neutrogena can get quite expensive, so he sells much bigger tubes for much less money in order that people can save money. However it is fine just to use the products you can buy in shops listed above.

It really does work for a LOT of people. There are also messageboards on the site for people to talk about the regime and discuss anything and everything.

clearasil and oxy stuff often doesnt work because it dries your skin out...your skin then produces excess oil to counteract that giving you spots again...

Yeah the thing is a lot of people with acne over-wash with the mistaken belief that you can wash acne away. You obviously can't. The thing is that people always tend to by the strongest items available, this is usually not a good thing. As I said above, you can buy BP cream which has a 10% concentration, so people automatically assume it must be better than 2.5%. This isn't the case. 10% is counter-productive because it is too drying. 2.5% isn't over-drying yet still is strong enough to do it's job.

As far as clearasil and oxy face washes go, forget it. If you have acne you need something with active ingredients like Benzoyl Peroxide. Foaming washes and such like are useless. They are just a big money-spinner.

I never touch oxy or clearasil because they always used to be too harsh for my skin and used to make it worse. Too tell the truth i find aloe vera and tea tree pretty helpful as they tend to take away the imflammation of spots and helps dry them out.
Started using a couple of the boots tea tree products and they seem to be really helping.

Yeah I saw that on TV too that only 2% go. I went mine was mild an yeah I agree no one should have to live with it. Like they say there are treatments an they are free an you know actually work over time! I would recomend the doctors.

I saw a picture of my the other day from about 3 years ago and I was covered in acne. Went to the hospital in the end and that roaccutane worked likea treat. All the creams etc I tried just dried my skin out really bad and stung and made my face go red.
