I saw an interview with Franz Ferdinand in the paper today.
How refreshing is it to see a decent band, genuinely humbled by their success, not afraid to admit that they were thrilled to be on Top Of The Pops and with no intention of making political music just for the sake of credibilty etc?
Shame more less obviously commercial music couldn't follow suit. Too many "credible" bands try too hard to be enigmatic and say fuck off to the mainstream, and they just end up coming across as complete wankers.
And another thing. One of my mates is into Franz Ferdinand, and gets well pissed off when they play "Take Me Out" in clubs, because he feels he needs to be seen as cool, and doesn't want to be listening to music that's seen as being anything resembling mainstream.
Why? Let's face it, if they didn't become "big" enough to be the next big thing in the likes of NME, then he wouldn't have heard of them himself. So his argument completely falls apart surely?
It annoys the fuck out of me when people begin detatching themslves from obviously good music, just because they happen to attract a wider audience, and aren't seen as "cutting edge".
Discuss.

This happened a few years ago with the LostProphets. They released their debut album on an indie label, and everyone loved them. They toured around the country a few times, and had a really solid fanbase.
They got some attention from a major record label who said they would re-release their debut album, so that hopefully a wider audience could get to hear it. But by doing this, most of their 'real' fans were screaming "Sell out!" at every oppurtunity they could get. Which sucks, because how is releasing an album so that more peopkle can hear it selling out?
The people who stop listening to bands they love because they get some recognition are cunts.

I have nothing sensible to contribute to this debate (too tried) except to voice my firm belief that Franz Ferdinand rock! :)
ETA that I agree, people who pride themselves being into "obscure" rock and who thus dismiss anything popular as being too "pop" are cutting off their nose to spite their face! Why stop listening to music you like just because it's popular? I think it was Herbert Kretzmer who said that "if you're in jazz and more than 10 people like you you're labelled commercial". Rock is moving too far this way, I think, and it's pointless.

The Hip-Hop scene has had this type of anal behaviour over the years. The amount of times I've heard someone being dissed for no longer being underground
I remember one of my favourite groups being classed as sellouts by someone because they got into the charts! Hello it was a good song and a lot of people thought so, why blame the artistes because it sold?

Where to start, where to start.
FF, don't rate them meself at all, that damn song... could it be any more annoying. As for Lost prophets, they re-released there album, mixed it up a bit, sounded crap. They didnt need a "bigger fanbase" I saw them in the good old days and they kicked ass, then change lable, can't be arsed to write new songs. Re-releases the old album with some differant track lengths. wooooooooooooo more money. And where are they now? Good fanbase.

That sort of behavious is clearly for commercial gain and it sucks but that doesn't justify people refusing to listen to music just 'cos it's "mainstream"!

oh yes i know what you mean.
most of my mates dont like bands like the darkness, foo fighters, nirvana, e.t.c because they are too "popular"
however they liked them bands when they werent as famous so whats changed? Nothing.
I think its just because they dont want to admit that they listen to the same kind of music as (excuse me these arent my words) "townies".
The sad thing is, i think they do like all this "popular rock" music, but they just wont admit it, and i think thats sad.

Thats just stupid cuz most 'townies' wouldn't listen to nirvana, and even if they do, so what?? The same thing happens with the 'punk' scene. AFI's first 7 or so albums were all raw and punky, and then they released Sing The Sorrow, moved to a major label. It was better produced, and their style had changed slightly, but it was for the best, yet people hate them for it, its stupid. I hate the phrase 'I like their old stuff', its the most annoying thing that people say, cuz nowadays its such a cliché. Grrrr!!
Franz Ferdinand rock, btw.
