it used to be that when the attacking player is passed the ball there must be two defensive (including the goalie) players between him and the goal. therefore if he is passed the ball when its just him and the goalie up there then he's offside.
they now changed it so its some silly thing like a player isnt offside if they arent interfereing with play, but almost no-one understands what the new rule is.
what 7 years of having a charlton season ticket teaches ya.

There must be at least one defender (not including the Goal Keeper) infront of an attacker when the ball is played.

It used to be any attacking player, rather than just the one receiving the ball... now the "Not interferring" rule is applied...

I haven't read up on the new rule but when I qualified as a referee in 1997 we were taught then that 'it's not an offense to be in an offside position' i.e. you're only offside when you're interfering. So we already had this rule?? Huh? I don't get it

Not really,
The keeper must be there also-
If say a keeper goes up for a corner and is not back in goal, and the ball is played with only 1 defender between attacker and goal the player is offside!

That rule was always there as far as I knew as well,
Think theyve just changed it slightly a few months back not just the recent change and it got overally publicsed.

The difference now is the point at which the player is determined to be "Interferring"...

If a Rovers player is caught offside, scream at the ref
If an opposing player is not seen to be offside, scream at the ref and the linesman.

Yeh, what I meant by 'not including the keeper', was that you must have one defender infront of the attacker, aswell as the goalie. But I s'pose I worded it wrong and stuff...Shush :o
