What do you make of this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/3401161.stm) ?
How on earth can they know wether he is using the internet or a mobile phone ?
Waste of time in my opinion.

How will they know wether he is or isnt using a mobile phone or the internet ? Thats my point, he can go out and buy a mobile phone or use internet cafes.

Also, in finding out that he'd made 1,700 mobile calls, I'd think they'd ascertain whether or not he'd used a mobile :p
sorry if that sounded patronising, but I couldn't think how to word it better :)

tyhe young lad i mentioned went round the estate tuanting people for being police informers using the word grass. now he can only walk on that green stuff or smoke that green stuff ...if he uses the word grass in the next five years he goes to jail.
how are you going to stop someone using a mobile
i tell you ...there all on coke ...good job they don't work for the bbc.

You couldn't really download child porn in an internet cafe though.

It could well be more a case of getting caught, rather than prevented.
Still you have to admit that ist going to be a big IF.
Lisa he has been banned from using internet so wether he is downloading porn or looking at Argos site he has still been banned. So how would they even catch him in the first place ?
He could use a friends PC in fact there are many ways he could get his hands on a computer.

he wasnt downloading kiddy porn, well he was but his sentence was to stop him chatting up young girls on the internet! that what the internet ban is for therefore who could stop him in a internet cafe...

You don't have to register a phone at the moment but i read in the paper the other day they are trying to get a ruling so that when a phone is bought it has to be registered there and then. This was all brought up due to the fact of people being able to use the net on there phones.

I'm growing increasingly tired with this bleeding Big Brother world we live in today.
They analyse your life and habbits with records provided by your Nectar/Tesco card... They track your travel movements with that Oyster smart Travelcard... And now they want you to register your mobile phone... so you'd be a walking GPS beacon as well.
Not happy.

Just to add to Aladdins point - there is also talks about fitting a kind of GPS thing in all new cars so they can be found when they break down are stolen etc.. which in a way is good but like Aladdin says it is like we are being monitored 24hrs a day.

I had to register mine on orange, but that was the sim, you could quite easily go under a different name!
Sound very silly to me, stopping people from using words, and mobiles? whats the world coming to

Don't forget that he'll be in prison for the next 2 years. TEchnology will have advanced significantly by then, and who's to say that there will still be a pay as you use service which is entirely unregistered?
The sooner the government wakes up to the idea that criminals can remain untraceable simply by not registering their phones the better.
As for the internet, they can simply ban him from using it at home, and restrict him to using cyber cafe's or libraries where he can't do so much.

I have an idea how it would work. Your ISP would be informed and certain numbers will be monitored for prolonged activity, what times their dialled, etc, especially free phone numbers. Probably all out bound communications will be monitored as well. The mobile phone thing is pretty easy enough to trace as well. There are ways of keeping a watch... us the public wouldn't be told how they do it any way, but it IS quite possible to have all this kind of stuff monitored.
I do think it's a very good idea as well.

So they know all his mates ? he could have the use of internet at a friend or family members house.

that's quite disgusting he only got 18 months.
they should break his fingers so he cant use a keyboard :p and stick sharp things in his ears so using a phone would be useless :)
hmmm banning someone from the internet is good in theory - but there's loads of holes in it. and I think you should have to register your phones by default because it stops abuse of them etc.
if he's determined though the government can't really stop him.

Most of the time he will be under supervision with random visits. They will know if he has used things he ain't supposed to use. They'll probably do more or less what they done to Kevin Mitnick in terms of monitoring. Once you've been hit with one of these orders, there's not much you can do to get round it. If you break your order you'll be inside for a long time.

Do you really beleive thtat ? I dont.
Like rehablitation, wha help he going to get ? none they will kick him out and he will be where he was.
So my theory is :
If a prisoner is sentenced to say 2 years the first 3 months let them settle into the life of a nick then after that make them go to classes and see what harm they have done to people.let them see interviews with victims, teach them that they cant keep doing stuff like this but if they are given a sentence of 2 years make em serve 2 year.........NO early release.
