Full time hours is 35 hours a week, but you pay tax on most work. I work part time (20hrs) and I pay tax.
basically, the more you earn, the more tax you pay up to a maximum of 40% of your earnings (I think) If you are a high earner.

I haven't even had a wage yet and I already hate Tax! From the amount they take from such a huge number of people this country should be a utopia! Spotless streets, top notch free healthcare, etc

The weekly tax and national insurance threshold is about 80 quid a week. Anything over that and you will pay tax, unless you haven't worked before, or earned very much since 6th April. Your allowances roll over from week to week, so it could be a while until you notice any tax or national insurance being taken out your wages

also you don't pay tax on the first £3k or so that you earn.

Everyone is liable to tax from the day they are born, if a 10yr old had interest from savings that exceeded the 4,615 personal allowance, then they would be liable to tax too. It's just a question of when and if you exceed your personal allowance.
