Which one is better? I always used Real Player....purely cos my ex installed and set it up when I got my computer and have just used it ever since. But lately it's been crashing all the time so thought about changing to Windows Media Player...is it better?

Depends upon what I want to listen to or watch.
For listening to MP3's I usually use Winamp, simply because it uses less resources, and is quick to use. I have it set as the default for MP3's and audio files.
Windows Media Player. I dont' like the way it organises its playlists. I just find it doesn't seem as quick, logical, and easy as RealPlayer to use. I have it set to play video files though as it seems to do that very well.
I have DivX too for DivX files.
RealPlayer One. Funilly enough I'm using it to listen to MP3's at the moment. I like the way it works. I like the way it's laid out. I like the way the playlists work, and it's easy to manage your music, videos, etc with RP One. I did prefer Real Jukebox 2 for its ease of use, but RealPlayer One is almost as good. Jukebox 2 was a bit flaky, and used to crash a lot though. RealPlayer One is good for creating CD's from MP3's as well. But I don't like the nag box that pops up with RealPlayer. Plus it seems resource hungry, and slows down the computer when I'm doing a lot of things at once.
