View Full Version : Operating Systems That Run From CD
Just come across Knoppix and have to say this is the first time I've managed to get Linux to run correctly on my machine .. this makes a really good OS for people with very old machines or if you need an emergency startup Disk.. Now if there's someone who know about this can you tell me how to configre this thing to read from my floppy drive the configuration settings cos I want my monitor to start up in a higher resolution.
Also found another one called Morphix which I'm about to try - supposed to have prepared ISO images for different usages - one is a 200MB CD for Basic computers, another is full of Games and another full of Applications like open office. This is based on Knoppix so hopefulyl should work well.

no SB, i'll have a rummage around later see if i can find it, its really designedc to give you an idea what Linux is like to use but you could quite easily use is as a serious OS if you really wanted too

I was going to suggest www.demolinux.com but it turns out that when you go to their download page it's knoppix. I've used Demolinux 2.0 on several computers now, and used it a couple of times as an emergency boot disk that allows me to explore the hard drive, when I've had serious problems with a PC before (ie Windoze had gone tits up).

Knoppix is great. I'm quite a fan of "Live" linux distros (I.e distributions that'll boot from a CD and not require the partitioning of harddrives etc)
a while ago SuSe8 had a Live demo on a 650mb disc, that was well good. but I think Knoppix is better (It is based on debian (http://www.debian.org) afterall!
also, for *very* old machines, try the "1.4mbb QNX Demo disk"
It boots from a floppy and has a browser, some games and full support for internet!, ideal to turn that old dusty 486 in the attic into something perhaps more useful.

Oh that sound sinteresting will ry and find it - I have LS-120's on my machine - so potentially could run any os that will fit on a 120mb disc.
