I know there are guides online how to do it, I'm not asking for that. I'm asking what you would get for:

a reasonable spec compute that can go on the internet run normal programs and stuff, other components can be upgraded when gaming is wanted. - like a good motherboard with reasonable inbuilt graphics for images and macromedia, but with an agp slot so when i have the cash i can upgrade to a better card for games like doom 3 half 2 to run smoothly :)

also sound could be inbuilt till it is upgraded.... i really dont know where to start at

and how much money would i be looking at for the 'bare bone' system? i dont want to pay too much :(

You can get motherboards with built in sound, graphics (Geforce 2), modem, etc, for about £80 ish. Have a look at the motherboard section on www.ebuyer.com Pick one with an AGP slot so can upgrade the graphics in the future. Then you just need a processor, heatsink/fan, memory, drives, a case, and you're up and running.
I think ebuyer even have an all in one mobo, with an AMD XP2000 soldered to the motherboard, for well under £100. Bargain if you just want a basic nippy machine until you can afford a decent mobo, CPU, graphics, etc.

soldered :eek2: - does that mean I will need to get a new motherboard and CPU when i want to upgrade? I'm not good at keeping all my money till one thing and am much better at buying incrementally you know?

I would go with onboard sound (that's inbuilt sound). The sound you get on motherboards now are really pretty good, so there's not much point in buying a soundcard separately if you can get pretty decent surround sound with your mobo (motherboard).
