How Many People Can You Date At Once?

I saw this programme that said in New York it's perfectly normal for a single person to be seeing like 3 or 4 different people at the same time.
Like that is what's called Dating in New York.

But I've never come across anyone over in the UK that dated this way (OK except my old Uni Flat mate who was seeing 5 girls at the same time but he was a tart :D )

What do you think is normal to date one person at a time or date lots? And if lots how would you feel if you found out someone you were seeing - was seeing other people?

Hmmm, this depends upon each persons definition of "dating".
From what I can tell, in the US, "dating" is a word used to mean that you can see more than one person, and sleep with one than more person, as you're just sort of getting to know them a bit better before making a decision on whether you want to actually have them as a boyfriend/girlfriend. And when you decide you want them as a boyfriend/girlfriend, then you become "exclusive" - ie, you're not seeing anybody else at all, or looking, or asking anybody else out, as that would then be cheating.
I suppose that could be a more acurate use of the word dating.
Over here, I think "dating" is seen as a word used when you start to go out with a girlfriend/boyfriend, but aren't committed to each other, but you aren't seeing anybody else at the time either.
So I think that the UK definition of "dating" is when you're still getting to know each other in those first few weeks, and maybe up to two, perhaps three, months (depending upon the people involved and their feelings), of a relationship as a boyfriend/girlfriend. And it means you're not screwing around.
But I expect other people to have their own interpretations of dating.

The thing is, everybody uses words and phrases, and interprets them, the way they wish to. There are different interpretations of the words "dating", "getting off", etc. I mean, you only have to follow the great example of Bill "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" Clinton to see how far you can bend words to suit yourself.

To answer your question DG. If it was a first date. ie, you meet someone, ask them out, and it's the first time you've been out with each other, then I wouldn't consider it as a boyfriend/girlfriend thing. After that, especally by the third date, I would expect them to be only seeing me, and I expect they would expect the same of me too. I mean, either you like each other or not by then, and neither of you should be messing the other around. I suppose my view is a halfway thing between the two, but I still wouldn't think it normal to be "dating" several people at the same time.
But to answer another of your questions DG. No, I wouldn't be happy knowing they were seeing anybody else either, let alone sleeping with them. It would feel like you were on some sort of a trial, or test, or that you weren't good enough for them. Sod that!

Well i consider dating a word you use about you and your boy/galfriend. I don't date more than one person at a time but i do 'see' a few people at a time, not if i'm dating someone tho. I don't care if someone i'm seeing is seeing other people, but if i'm dating someone i consider that a commitment not to see other people anymore.

Yup, its fun dating lots of people and not getting serious, I just make sure everyone knows and I dont lead them on. If I start to grow feelings for someone that is the time to single that person out :p
