Seeing as everyone is talking about Office suites - I've been downloading a lot of alternatives lately - because my cousin University Dissertation was written on Word XP and it kept constantly crashing when it got to page 6 .. and he couldn't recover any of the work using Word.
So I did a search on the internet for free office suites that can read and write Word formatted Documents.
Open office as menioned in other threads was by far the best and most like word - although a pretty big download
another alternative which is freeware is from this site

It's a word processor, spreadsheet and photo package - and totally free and can read and write in word format.
